Does Prayer And Fasting Really Work

David Fasted Before His Child Died Take The Following Verse:

Does Intermittent Fasting Work

David pleaded with God for the child. He fasted and spent the nights lying in sackcloth on the ground. 2 Samuel 12:16

David knew that God was going to take his child , but he fasted as a way to change Gods mind. David was petitioning God for something.

He was asking for his child to live and not die, even though God had told him that the child would die. In the end, Davids fasting did not work and the child dies.

Then David got up from the ground. After he had washed, put on lotions, and changed his clothes, he went into the house of the Lord and worshiped. Then he went to his own house, and at his request, they served him food, and he ate. His attendants asked him, Why are you acting this way? While the child was alive, you fasted and wept, but now that the child is dead, you get up and eat! He answered, While the child was still alive, I fasted and wept. I thought, Who knows? The Lord may be gracious to me and let the child live. But now that he is dead, why should I go on fasting? Can I bring him back again? I will go to him, but he will not return to me. 2 Samuel 12:20-23

The first and most immediate answer is the reward of what our fast is for. What was the specific stated purpose as we rehearsed above? Fasting functions as a kind of assistant to prayer. It comes alongside some specific request were making of God, through the access we have in Christ , and expresses an unusual earnestness. Fasting, as a handmaid of prayer, makes some special plea to God, with an added intensity from normal, everyday prayer.

Fasting is a kind of special measure in the life of faith. Normal life is not fasting. Normal life is steady-state prayer and enjoying the Giver through his gifts of food and drink. Fasting is a special mode, for unusual prayer and for showing the Giver we enjoy him more than his gifts.

Prayer And Fasting In The Bible

Powerful Miracle Prayer that Really Works Fast

Fasting is mentioned throughout the Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament . However, when Christians discuss fasting, two key passages often come up: one from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah and one from Jesus himself. But neither of these passages gives us specifics on how to abstain from food. Rather, both focus on the heart of the person fasting.

In Isaiah 58, God sees the nation of Israel abstaining from food for a day in order to seek help from God: justice for Israel and judgment on those who have oppressed Israel. However, the help does not come, and the people complain.

God turns the tables on Israel, pointing out how the Israelites are oppressing their own people. Employers withhold pay from the workers, and the people act violently toward each other. Through Isaiah, God tells the people that He doesnt want them to go a day without food He wants them to abstain from the ways theyve oppressed one another.

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungryand satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

The Israelites were merely putting on a show of fasting for God without truly following Him.

Likewise, when Jesus instructs His followers on how to fast, he tells them not to do so for show.

The Bible is full of examples of people who have abstained from food to seek God:

Key Summary Points On The Mechanism Of Prayer

  • The spiritual level of a person generally defines whether a person prays for spiritual growth or for worldly benefit. Depending on the type of prayer, higher-level deities or lower-level deities respectively answer a persons prayers.
  • The spiritual emotion with which one prays has a positive impact on the effectiveness of ones prayer.
  • Depending on what type of mudra is used, the benefit that one gets through prayer can vary.
  • All other things being equal, using the recommended mudra for prayer helps to improve the chances of ones prayer being answered by 20%.
  • Prayers said by people of lower spiritual level for things that affect the wider population, such as world peace or a reduction in global warming, have no effect.
  • When one pays gratitude along with prayer, it helps to increase the effectiveness of ones prayer.

Fasting Guidelines And Information

But the days will come when the Bridegroom will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Matthew 9:15

Fasting begets prophets and strengthens strong men. Fasting makes lawgivers wise it is the souls safeguard, the bodys trusted comrade, the armor of the champion, the training of the athlete.

Basil, Bishop of Caesarea

Fasting opens the way for the outpouring of the Spirit and the restoration of Gods house. Fasting in this age of the absent Bridegroom is in expectation of His return. Soon there will be the midnight cry, Behold, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him. It will be too late then to fast and to pray. The time is now.

Gods Chosen Fast, Arthur Wallis

There has been a resurgence of fasting in recent decades, as God calls His people to regular fasting as part of a normal Christian lifestyle. We must prepare ourselves adequately so that the fast can honor God and fulfill its purpose. The following is a general overview of biblical precedent and guidelines for wise fasting to help and encourage you.

Does It Mean That Every Time We Pray We Should Take This Position

If one is at a higher spiritual level , divine subtle frequencies begin to be received directly through the Brahmarandhra itself. The Brahmarandhra is a subtle-opening above the crown chakra that has access to the Universal Mind and Intellect. This subtle-opening is closed in people of a lower spiritual level. The primary factor that helps the opening of the Brahmarandhra is a lower level of ego. When in this phase of our spiritual growth, the need for the prayermudra as explained above becomes less and less.

However, if a person between the spiritual levels of 50% and 80% complements his prayer with the recommended mudra, then he gets the benefit of additional Divine consciousness. This additional benefit is 30% more in the case of a person at the 50% spiritual level and it proportionately becomes less and less as the spiritual level increases.

Since most people are not of a high spiritual level, they are unable to receive Divine frequencies through the Brahmarandhra. Most people are, however, able to receive subtle-frequencies through their fingertips , as our finger tips are very sensitive to receiving or sending out subtle-energy. For people at this level, it is best that they do utilise the prayer mudra suggested above to make a prayer. All other factors remaining equal, by praying using the recommended mudra, a person will add 20% to the effectiveness of their prayer as opposed to not using this mudra.

What You Can Take Away From David

PRAYER & FASTING: 5 PRACTICAL TIPS
  • Although fasting can get you an answer from God or have God move on your prayer request. If Gods answer is no, then no amount of fasting is going to change that.
  • Just because you feel that God has said no or his answer is to wait, do not get discouraged. Like David, you can still fast and petition God for something. Remember fasting is like your flesh calling out to God asking God to listen to you.
  • It is possible that Gods answer still may be no. But your fasting may change his mind to yes. I know in the above tip that I said if Gods answer is no then it is no. But you can never really know for sure if His answer is no unless you try as David did. And besides people have been able to change Gods mind before

What Is Spiritual Fasting And What Should I Be Fasting From

Now that you understand why people engage in spiritual fasting, you can learn how to fast. There are many ways to fast. I believe that you can choose whatever way that you want. The main point is that you are denying your flesh. Therefore, if you are already a vegetarian then it would not be wise for you to give up meat. Because in reality you are not really giving up anything and that is not fast. You are just going about your everyday life without eating meat like you always do. There is nothing special about that.

Now if you are a true meat lover and you decide to give up meat then that is a true fast. Even though you are not giving up food entirely, you are denying your flesh and giving up something that is hard for you to give up. And that is what God appreciates. The harder the fast, the more God will pay attention to your petition. Remember the story of Esther. You can also check out my blog on the Daniel fast to understand the various types of fasting.

So Is Intermittent Fasting As Good As It Sounds

I was very curious about this, so I asked the opinion of metabolic expert Dr. Deborah Wexler, Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Diabetes Center and associate professor at Harvard Medical School. Here is what she told me. “There is evidence to suggest that the circadian rhythm fasting approach, where meals are restricted to an eight to 10-hour period of the daytime, is effective,” she confirmed, though generally she recommends that people “use an eating approach that works for them and is sustainable to them.”

So, heres the deal. There is some good scientific evidence suggesting that circadian rhythm fasting, when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can be a particularly effective approach to weight loss, especially for people at risk for diabetes.

What Are Other Types Of Fasting

The most common type of fast is fasting from food for a period of time, but are there other types?

TV/Movie Fast: You can take a break from a weekly favorite and use the time to pray or read the Bible. Is there a small group at church that you’ve thought about joining but it’s during the time your show is on? Do you spend your Saturday binging Netflix when you could take some time to mentor someone God has placed on your heart? This is also a good time to evaluate how much of your time is spent watching TV and whether you need to cut back to make time for other priorities.

Social Media Fast: This is becoming one of the more common fasts in our culture. Do you need to take some time away from the noise and refresh? Log out of your accounts, delete them from your device for a period of time, and just spend that time being present with God. Pray and listen. Spend some time in nature soaking in His beauty. Spend some time alone worshipping God.

Secular Music Fast: Instead of listening to Top Hits on the radio, you can choose to listen to the Christian radio station for a period of time. Pop in a CD of your favorite worship leader when you’re driving to work. Listen to a Christian podcast or audiobook. You can even turn the stereo off completely and spend that time in prayer. You’ll be amazed what this little change will do for your life.

The Bible Has Much To Say About Fasting

Often verses we read of men and women in the Bible going into deep war or decision in prayer, it is accompanied by fasting. One of the most famous fasts is the one performed by Daniel in the Book of Daniel.

Daniel 9:3-5 shares, So I turned to the Lord God and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, in fasting, and in sackcloth and ashes. I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed: Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments, we have sinned and done wrong. We have been wicked and have rebelled we have turned away from your commands and laws. Daniels heart ached for his country, so he took a vow of a fast from certain foods and remained deeply in prayer. It continues on in the book that an Angel comes to see Daniel, and the Angel shares that he left the exact moment Daniel started praying. Remarkably, it took twenty-one days for the Angel to get past the forces of Darkness to reach Daniel. This is evidence that from the first moment we commit to a fast, the Lord hears us. He is always working in action to come near to us, and to send help.

Fasting Is Not About Twisting God’s Arm

In Isaiah 58:2, God gives us His heart for true fasting: “Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God they ask of me righteous judgments they delight to draw near to God. God honors the heart, not the act.”

Fasting has nothing to with twisting God’s arm by saying, “Lord, I met the terms you asked for. Give me what I want.”

Fasting is first and foremost about delighting in drawing near to God and coming to Him with a full heart and only secondarily about approaching Him with an empty stomach.

If our motives in fasting are to get a car, some cash, a job or a relationship more quickly, we miss the point. Prayer and fasting is about receiving a greater experience of Jesus and the Holy Spirit first and being open to His miraculous move in our lives according to God’s will.

How To Begin Your Fast

How you begin and conduct your fast will largely determine your success. By following these seven basic steps to fasting, you will make your time with the Lord more meaningful and spiritually rewarding.

STEP 1: Set Your Objective

Why are you fasting? Is it for spiritual renewal, for guidance, for healing, for the resolution of problems, for special grace to handle a difficult situation? Ask the Holy Spirit to clarify His leading and objectives for your prayer fast. This will enable you to pray more specifically and strategically.

Through fasting and prayer we humble ourselves before God so the Holy Spirit will stir our souls, awaken our churches, and heal our land according to 2 Chronicles 7:14. Make this a priority in your fasting.

STEP 2: Make Your Commitment

Pray about the kind of fast you should undertake. Jesus implied that all of His followers should fast For Him it was a matter of when believers would fast, not if they would do it. Before you fast, decide the following up front:

  • How long you will fastone meal, one day, a week, several weeks, forty days
  • The type of fast God wants you to undertake
  • What physical or social activities you will restrict
  • How much time each day you will devote to prayer and Gods Word

Making these commitments ahead of time will help you sustain your fast when physical temptations and lifes pressures tempt you to abandon it.

STEP 3: Prepare Yourself Spiritually

STEP 4: Prepare Yourself Physically
