Dont Give Yourself A Hard Time

And the flipside of focusing on the positives of these new changes is to not give yourself a hard time, or expect to be perfect. Its very rare to quit eating meat and added sugar, and integrate an entirely new system of eating and exercising all at once.

You might have nights where you splurge, or weeks where youre busy and might not be able to exercise. Family life, work, and vacations get in the way.

The important thing is to focus on the long term effect. Are you moving in the right direction in general? If so, dont give yourself a hard time.

If I Have Gestational Diabetes How Will It Be Treated

Treating gestational diabetes comes down to one key factor: controlling your blood sugar. The goal is to manage your blood glucose level so that it doesnt go too high and stay high. This is accomplished by eating wisely, remaining physically active, and if needed taking medication to help keep your blood sugar levels in your target range.

The importance of treating gestational diabetes gained attention following the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes trial, which demonstrated a direct link between continuous treatment of the maternal glucose levels and reducing negative outcomes.2

  • Eating Wisely. Meals will require more thought, indeed a lot more thought, than must be necessary if you have gestational diabetes. You’ll need to pay attention to what you eat, how much you eat, and when you eat. A registered dietitian or certified diabetes educator can help you create a meal plan thats full of good-for-you and good-for-the-baby foods. The goal of the meal plan is to make it easier to control your blood glucose level so it stays in your target range. Your meal plan will reflect your likes and dislikes, and will take into account your overall health and physical activity level. For more information on what goes into the meal plan and what you can eat, read our article on the healthy meal planning with diabetes.

Ive Tried A Bedtime Snack And Its Not Working

Pre

We often get ladies in our support group saying Ive tried a bedtime but it doesnt work for me, yet when asking what theyve tried theyve had fruit or toast etc.

The best things to eat are high protein and high natural fat.

Bedtime snacks may take some playing around with to find what works best for you. As your pregnancy progresses and your insulin resistance increases, you may need to change to find things that work better.

A bedtime snack does not work for everybody.

Depending on what is eaten, some ladies see higher fasting levels from eating bedtime snacks, but many that have eaten bedtime snacks have had good success.

Please note: It is very common to be advised not to eat after a certain time of day by your dietician or diabetic team. This causes some huge problems for shift workers, night workers, or those that eat late in the evening. Our advice of eating little and often may be opposed by the advice given to you by your diabetes team. Only you can be the judge of this and see what works best for youpersonally, but eating little and often and having bedtime snacks has been successful for the majority of our support group members.

Oral Glucose Tolerance Test

A standardized oral glucose tolerance test should be done in the morning after an overnight fast of between 8 and 14 hours. During the three previous days the subject must have an unrestricted diet and unlimited physical activity. The subject should remain seated during the test and should not smoke throughout the test.

The test involves drinking a solution containing a certain amount of glucose, usually 75 g or 100 g, and drawing blood to measure glucose levels at the start and on set time intervals thereafter.

The diagnostic criteria from the National Diabetes Data Group have been used most often, but some centers rely on the Carpenter and Coustan criteria, which set the cutoff for normal at lower values. Compared with the NDDG criteria, the Carpenter and Coustan criteria lead to a diagnosis of gestational diabetes in 54 percent more pregnant women, with an increased cost and no compelling evidence of improved perinatal outcomes.

The following are the values which the American Diabetes Association considers to be abnormal during the 100 g of glucose OGTT:

  • Fasting blood glucose level â¥95 mg/dL
  • 1 hour blood glucose level â¥180 mg/dL
  • 2 hour blood glucose level â¥155 mg/dL
  • 3 hour blood glucose level â¥140 mg/dL

High And Low: How To Reduce Blood Sugar Level Immediately

Is insulin enough to reduce blood sugar immediately? Insulins main function is to lower blood sugar levels, but does your insulin dosage do the job?

The simple answer is: yes, insulin does the job, especially for those with insulin-dependent diabetes. There are certainly alternative ways to lower blood sugar immediately, but thats not exactly the goal when it comes to diabetes.

You dont want to lower blood sugar rapidly, just for the sake of being rapid. If you reduce blood sugar too quickly, then youll end up having to deal with low blood sugar instead.

Diabetes management is more about finding balance and treating yourself in a controlled manner. So, while you might need to reduce blood sugar immediately in some situations, you can do it in a way where youre still in control.

Brief Summary About Gestational Diabetes

As the name suggests, it occurs during pregnancy and its only found in pregnancy. You cannot get rid of it during pregnancy, but again its treatable! And it usually goes away on its own after giving birth.

Causes and risk factors

Like diabetes mellitus, in GD the body also loses its natural ability to use glucose for energy as effectively as usual. What is the exact cause? The answer is not fully known yet. But there are some explanations.

The increased pregnancy hormones, especially in late pregnancy, are often to blame. The placenta is essential part of pregnancy. It is responsible to stimulate and produce essential hormones for baby development and growth during pregnancy.

But some of these hormones can interrupt with the mothers insulin that may cause a condition called insulin resistance . The demand for insulin can significantly increase during pregnancy, could be 2-3 times greater than normal. In some pregnancies, the body fails to make enough insulin, and GD may develop.

When pregnancy is over, so is gestational diabetes. Soon after delivery, the pregnancy hormones and placenta go away. Then insulin will return to normal.

Doctors dont know why some pregnancies develop GD. But in general, the risk of developing the condition is high in women with the following risk factors:

  • Being obese before pregnant.
  • GD is also likely to run in families. If you have a family history of GD or diabetes mellitus, your risk is higher to develop the same condition.

How To Measure Your Blood Sugar | Gestational Diabetes Blood Sugar

Your body uses glucose for energy and it is important to have enough extra energy to be able to wake up in the morning. So for a period of time in the early morning hours, usually between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m., your body starts churning out stored glucose to prepare for the upcoming day.

At the same time, your body releases hormones that reduce your sensitivity to insulin. In addition, these events may be happening while your diabetes medication doses taken the day before are wearing off.

These events cause your body’s blood sugar levels to rise in the morning .

    Obstetric And Perinatal Considerations

The presence of fasting hyperglycemia may be associated with an increase in the risk of intrauterine fetal death during the last 48 weeks of gestation. Although uncomplicated GDM with less severe fasting hyperglycemia has not been associated with increased perinatal mortality, GDM of any severity increases the risk of fetal macrosomia. Neonatal hypoglycemia, jaundice, polycythemia, and hypocalcemia may complicate GDM as well. GDM is associated with an increased frequency of maternal hypertensive disorders and the need for cesarean delivery. The latter complication may result from fetal growth disorders and/or alterations in obstetric management due to the knowledge that the mother has GDM.

    What Is Diabetic Ketoacidosis

If you think you may have low blood sugar, check it even if you dont have symptoms.

When too many ketones are produced too fast, they can build up in your body and cause diabetic ketoacidosis, or DKA. DKA is very serious and can cause a coma or even death. Common symptoms of DKA include:

    • Fast, deep breathing.
    • Nausea and vomiting.
    • Stomach pain.

If you think you may have DKA, test your urine for ketones. Follow the test kit directions, checking the color of the test strip against the color chart in the kit to see your ketone level. If your ketones are high, . DKA requires treatment in a hospital.

DKA happens most in people with type 1 diabetes and is sometimes the first sign of type 1 in people who havent yet been diagnosed. People with type 2 diabetes can also develop DKA, but its less common.
