Benefits of Intermittent Fasting and Blood Type Diet

According to Colleen Tewksbury, PhD, MPH, RD, president of the Pennsylvania Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, theres not a lot of scientific evidence suggesting that theres a weight loss strategy thats best suited for each body type.

It is possible, says Tewksbury, whos also a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. We may find that to be the case, five to 10 years from now. Doctors currently aren’t very concerned with specific body type, but more so the waist circumference of their patients. A larger waist circumference is a risk factor for certain chronic health conditions that are associated with carrying around more weight, like metabolic syndrome or diabetes.

So, you could think of body type more in terms of how its linked to body composition, notes Sarah Thomson Ferreira, MS, MPHD, RN, a dietitian with the Cleveland Clinics Center for Functional Medicine.

For example, if your body type is endomorph, you may be more likely to carry extra fat around your midsection and have a larger waist circumference. You may be more likely to be insulin resistant, too, which can make weight loss more challenging, notes Palinski-Wade. And losing weight, even a modest amount like 3-7% of our body weight, can improve the health factors associated with a larger waist circumference, says Tewksbury.

The Risks Of Intermittent Fasting

Low blood sugar, a.k.a. hypoglycemia, can cause a rapid heart rate, sweating, shakiness, and other symptoms. If severe, it can induce weakness, seizures, or even death. People with Type 2 diabetes are at increased risk for hypoglycemiaespecially if they go long periods without eatingand this was one of the first dangers experts looked at when assessing the safety of intermittent fasting. If you are taking medications that are aimed at reducing the amount of glucose in your blood, together with fasting these can cause potentially fatal hypoglycemia, Horne says. Its not a minor safety risk.

For people who arent taking drugs to lower their blood sugar, Horne says the risk of hypoglycemia seems to be very low. People should still consult with someone who treats diabetesa physician such as an endocrinologist, or at least a nutritionist who is trained in diabetes treatment, he says. Like Corley, he says even people on blood-sugar medications could attempt intermittent fasting so long as they are working with an expert. Its not so much should they or shouldnt they. Its more the degree to which they should be monitored, he says.

Aside from hypoglycemia, a second major concern is dehydration. High blood glucose causes general dehydration in the body, and people with Type 2 diabetes are already at elevated risk. Intermittent fasting may further increase these risks if people are drinking or eating less than they normally would.

The 3 Types Of Intermittent Fasting Compared

Fasting for five days with juice will just leave you cranky and hungry. But fasting for 16-24 hours throughout the week? Thatll leave you energized and leaner.

Intermittent fasting, as this diet method is known, is just as effective as daily calorie restriction for improving body composition, according to a 2017 study analysis from the International Society of Sports Nutrition.

Unlike calorie restriction, though, intermittent fasting doesnt require you to count calories all the timeand its better at preventing hunger.

Furthermore, intermittent fasting is especially good at helping you lose fat while maintaining muscle, rather than losing both , says Krista Varady, Ph.D., an associate professor of kinesiology and nutrition at the University of Illinois at Chicago and key researcher on intermittent fasting. According to a study analysis in Nutrition Reviews, intermittent fasting also helps improve total cholesterol and triglyceride levels in both overweight and normal-weight people. The best part: Theres virtually no downside.

There are three types of intermittent fasting: whole-day fasting, alternate-day fasting, and time-restricted feeding.

Youll see the same benefits from eachthat is, losing fat without losing musclebut, since each type incorporates a different fasting period and fasting frequency, some are better-suited to certain guys and fitness lifestyles.

Your Lifestyle Can’t Accommodate The Eating Hours

Your work schedule can greatly influence your ability to engage in IF successfully. For example, if you work the night shift and have to sleep during the day, but one of your eating periods falls within the daytime, what do you do? Or worse, what if the majority of your fast occurs while you’re hard at work. Or, what if you work different shifts each day and never have a consistent schedule? Bannan says that fasting intervals can make you feel cold and experience headaches and mood swings. Having to cope with all of those potential side effects could distract you from work and make you less productive.

Theoretic Origins Of Blood Types

According to Dr. DAdamo, the A-positive blood type became prevalent during the early years of the agricultural age. He theorizes this is why people with this blood type can readily digest vegetables and carbohydrates, but have a difficult time digesting animal protein and fat.

The A-positive blood type diet is primarily vegetarian. DAdamo believes people with this blood type have less-than-robust immune systems and are prone to anxiety. His diet plan promises:

  • weight loss
  • more energy
  • better digestion

As with any diet, people may try this plan in order to lose weight or for other health benefits. Weight loss and lowered cholesterol have been reported by people who have tried this diet. However, theres no evidence the theory underlying this diet caused these results.

Like many other food plans, this plan stresses avoidance of:

  • processed foods

2012 study found non-O blood type groups, including type A blood, were associated with a higher risk of coronary heart disease. A 2015 study found the type A blood group had an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. More research is needed to understand why.

One found that adherence to the A-positive blood type diet might yield benefits, such as:

  • reduced body mass index
  • blood pressure
  • serum triglycerides
  • cholesterol

However, these benefits werent seen to be influenced by, or associated with, study participants blood types.

Which Fasting Plan Is Best

The term intermittent fasting does not refer to a single well-defined practice. Several different approaches fall under the intermittent fasting umbrella. The three most common and well-studied are known as time-restricted eating, alternate-day fasting, and the 5:2 diet.

The first of thesetime-restricted eatinginvolves squeezing all of your days calories into a single feeding window of six to eight hours. For example, someone on this diet may eat between noon and 6 p.m. each day, and avoid all caloric foods and drinks for the other 18 hours of the day. Meanwhile, someone on an alternate-day-fasting diet eats normally one day, but the next day consumes few or no calories. Finally, the 5:2 diet involves eating normally five days a week but fasting on the other two days.

There are many variations of each of these plans. At this point, its unclear which of these, if any, is optimal for people with Type 2 diabetes. I think time-restricted eating is probably the most common, followed by fasting two days a week, Horne says. But at the moment, I would say there is not one plan that stands out as a best option. The right plan, he adds, is the one a patient will stick with. Even if the more intense fasting programs turn out to be most beneficial, that doesnt really matter if people cant adhere to it.

You’re Pregnant Or Breastfeeding

Engaging in IF while pregnant or breastfeeding can pose a threat to a child’s development. Calder says, “Pregnancy and breastfeeding require adequate intake of calories for proper development of the baby and milk production. Periods of fasting will interfere with your caloric intake, so pregnant and breastfeeding women should not do intermittent fasting.”

If you’re trying to get pregnant, IF may also not be the diet of choice for you. Bannan points out that IF may also be linked to fertility issues, causing changes in menstruation, disruptions in metabolism, and even prompting early menopause in women.

Does Your Body Type Play A Role In Success

Intermittent Fasting and the Blood Type Diet

In the 1940s, psychologist W.H. Sheldon described three main body types, or somatotypes:

  • Ectomorph, a slim and lanky body type
  • Endomorph, a rounder shape, often with a wide waist
  • Mesomorph, a more muscular type

You may recognize yourself in one of these three extremes, or you may fall somewhere in between. So, could your specific body type affect your success with intermittent fasting? Maybebut the truth is, it hasn’t been studied enough for doctors to give any definitive answers.

How Is T2d Treated

There are two approaches to treat T2D. The first is lifestyle changes and the second is medications. Adopting a healthy lifestyle can help lower the risk of diabetes. Healthy life style contains: lose weight, get active, eat right, avoid highly processed carbs, sugary drinks, and trans and saturated fats, limit red and processed meats, quit smoking and finally work to keep from gaining weight after you quit smoking, so you do not create one problem by solving another. It is possible to reach your target blood sugar levels with diet and exercise alone. However, if changing lifestyle is not enough several medicines exist to treat diabetes. Among the medicine functions are: Lowering the amount of glucose your liver makes and helps your body responding better to the insulin. Helping your body make more insulin, making you more sensitive to insulin. Causing slow digestion and lowering blood sugar levels and finally help your kidneys filter out more glucose.

Why Might Changing Timing Help

But why does simply changing the timing of our meals to allow for fasting make a difference in our body? An in-depth review of the science of IF recently published in New England Journal of Medicine sheds some light. Fasting is evolutionarily embedded within our physiology, triggering several essential cellular functions. Flipping the switch from a fed to fasting state does more than help us burn calories and lose weight. The researchers combed through dozens of animal and human studies to explain how simple fasting improves metabolism, lowers blood sugar levels lessens inflammation, which improves a range of health issues from arthritic pain to asthma and even helps clear out toxins and damaged cells, which lowers risk for cancer and enhances brain function.

Proposed Health Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting

When it comes to weight loss, there are two thoughts behind why IF has the potential to work. The first: Periods of fasting produce a net calorie deficit, so you lose weight, explains Rekha Kumar, MD, a specialist in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolism at the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell Medicine and NewYorkPresbyterian in New York City.

The other concept is more complex: This approach may prevent whats called the plateau phenomenon from happening, Dr. Kumar says.

Biggest Loser

Though more research is needed on the safety and effectiveness of IF, one of the touted benefits of this approach is that it may prevent this metabolic sputtering. Most people who try diet and exercise to lose weight tend to fall off the wagon and regain weight, Kumar says. Hormones that promote weight regain, like hunger hormones, are kicked into full gear, and the thought is that IF may be a way to prevent this metabolic adaptation from happening. The idea is that the normal periods of eating in IF trick your body into losing weight before the plateau happens.

Which Foods Should O

Youll need to deny yourself an extensive list of food when on the diet. Most beans and grains, for instance, should absolutely be avoided. Grain contain lectins that interfere with insulin metabolism, while beans make muscle tissue less acidic and may even block the metabolism of other nutrients. Having said that, you are allowed some exceptions such as azuki and pinto beans, as well as barley, rice, and buckwheat.

Although vegetables and fruit make up an essential part of most diets, some of them are not suitable for people with blood type O. Those to avoid include eggplant, potatoes, corn, avocado, strawberries, and blackberries.

Eggplants and potatoes are not allowed, as they adversely contribute to arthritis due to the chemical solanine found in them. You should also avoid corn because it affects insulin regulation.

Do not eat oranges, strawberries or blackberries as these might cause inflammation of the stomach lining because of the fact that they are highly acidic.

Furthermore, avocado is high in fat. People with blood type O are recommended to keep it away from their diet.

People going on the blood type O diet should also keep away from certain types of meat and seafood, and most dairy products. This is because they include hard to digest animal protein. Such meat includes pork, ham, bacon, goose, octopus, caviar, smoked salmon, milk, and milk-based goods such as yogurt and ice-cream.

Causes And Risk Factors

Usually, a combination of things causes T2D. There are several gene mutations linked to diabetes. Not everyone who carries a mutation will get diabetes. However, many people with diabetes do have one or more of these mutations. Being overweight or obese can cause IR. People with insulin resistance often have a group of conditions commonly called Metabolic syndrome, including high blood sugar, extra fat around the waist, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and high triglycerides. Another cause can be bad communication between cells. Sometimes, cells send the wrong signals or do not pick up messages correctly. When these problems affect how cells make and use insulin or glucose, a chain reaction can lead to diabetes. Finally, broken beta cells can cause diabetes since if the cells that make insulin send out the wrong amount of insulin at the wrong time, blood sugar is not controlled properly.
