Can I Have Coffee With Intermittent Fasting

Zero Desire For Junk Food

Can I have Flavored Coffee While Intermittent Fasting?

Most people have a sweet tooth thats been drilled into them since they were kids.

Its a problem.

Its what leads to the desire for cookies, ice cream, overeating virtually anyting and everything, and emotional eating which is a very real thing .

If you can eliminate this desire for junk food for the rest of your life, man, youre going to be one lean, fit motherfucker.

Black coffee helps you to achieve this, because youre starting each and every morning with a bitter taste, which almost drives out your sweet tooth over time.

Highly recommended.

But what if you have milk in your coffee? Wont that ruin the fast?

Is Intermittent Fasting Safe

People can begin intermittent fasting for a variety of reasons. Some may begin to lose and manage weight and while others may be using intermittent fasting to address other health issues that could use a change in diet.

Regardless of reasoning, anyone planning to begin IF should consult and receive approval from their primary care doctor. If youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or have medical problems like, intermittent fasting may not be right for you.

If you begin intermittent fasting and experience unusual headaches, mental health disturbances such as anxiety or depression or have unusual changes in mood, consult with your primary healthcare provider to determine the best strategy or plan for your individual wellness.

Intermittent fasting is not for everyone. Even if intermittent fasting is safe for you, it might not be the right diet for you.

If you find that IF makes you feel good and supports your health journey, thats wonderful! Youre joining a large community of fasters who have also found that IF enriches their life. If you find that intermittent fasting triggers disordered eating habits, makes you feel icky, or otherwise isnt the best option for your nutritional needs, thats OK too! There is no one size fits all approach to health.

Does Half And Half In A Coffee Break A Fast

Its easy to assume that since half and half isnt flavored, adding a little to your coffee wont do any harm. However, even a small amount can derail your fast.

Once you start pouring your favorite add-ins into your coffee, you add calories, fat, and sugar.

Even just a small amount of milk will affect your blood sugar enough to break your fast. Other coffee mix-ins to avoid in order to keep your fast include:

  • Sugar
  • Butter

Cream In Coffee During Fast

Ive been eating LCHF for about 6 weeks and lost around 26 pounds which obviously Im very happy with. My weight loss has now significantly slowed which Im not overly concerned about but thought Id try 24-hour fasting which Ive done for the last few days and feel great. However, I am having cream in my coffee during the fasting hours which really helps me cope. Am I undoing all the positives of the fast by doing this?

Lucy

Good question Lucy. First, let me start by saying nobody knows the answer for sure. We simply dont have enough data to support a conclusion.

Anecdotally, I use cream in coffee during fasts as well. For me, that little bit of cream does not stop me from getting the results that I desire.

In others, it may undo some of the positives, but generally not.

The key is to monitor your goals and see if you are progressing.

One Thing To Always Avoid

Intermittent Fasting & Coffee: Can You Drink Coffee While ...

Despite the fact that they don’t contain calories, most of the experts we spoke with said zero-calorie sweeteners should be avoided during a fastand pretty much all the time.

“I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners at all,” says Pedre. “Technically these have zero calories, so they would be ‘legal’ during a fast, but we’ve seen how they can disrupt gut balance and cause lots more problems. I would steer clear of them altogether, and if you need a sweetener, use organic 100% stevia sparingly during fasting hours.”

Miller agrees, explaining that even though something has zero calories, it can still negate some of fasting’s most significant benefits, including appetite control. “Just because something is noncaloric doesn’t mean it is free of metabolic influence,” says Miller. “The taste of sweet impacts GLP-1 receptors on the tongue, which enhances insulin releasethis is not ideal, as insulin has a negative impact on fasting and may drive blood sugar drops.” And blood sugar drops, as we all know, can make us miserable and hangry.

Does Coconut Oil Break A Fast

Coconut oil can be classified as pure fat, and pure fat never affects your blood sugar, insulin, or any other indicator of an intermittent fast. When you consume coconut oil mixed with coffee, your body will still burn fat.

Some people also believe that consuming coconut oil while on an intermittent fast helps you fast longer. It also makes the fasting much more tolerable.

If you can do a twelve hour fast with regular coffee , when you add a bit of coconut oil you may be able to easily extend your fast to sixteen.

Additionally, coconut oil has also been found to spare the autophagy process, meaning it doesnt affect intermittent fasting negatively.

Having said that, many experts still disapprove of consuming coffee with coconut oil during intermittent fasting because it breaks a fast. Coconut oil is not calorie free when you consume it, you ingest calories.

If you consume coffee and coconut oil for breakfast, you need to be mentally prepared to burn off those extra calories and fat grams once you break your fast. Therefore, you need to consider this when entering your eating window.

Intermittent Fasting: Coffee With Sweetener

The most common sweeteners are aspartame in Diet Coke, acesulfame-K in Coke Zero, and sucralose in Splenda.

None of them provide carbohydrates, proteins, or calories. Nevertheless, studies show that they increase insulin levels significantly.

For example, sucralose increases insulin levels by around 20 percent .

While aspartame, the classic sweetener in diet soda, does not affect blood sugar, it can increase insulin levels more than regular sugar .

Moreover, the artificial sweetener acesulfame potassium in zero drinks increases insulin levels in the same fashion as glucose does .

Therefore, in addition to a variety of other side effects, these sweeteners prevent fat burning.

Hence, artificial sweeteners are no safe option during intermittent fasting.

Five Types Of Intermittent Fasting

Can I Have Cream in Coffee When Intermittent Fasting?
  • Time-Restricted Eating: This typically takes the form of the 16:8 plan or the 14:10 plan . Its also known as the time-restricted fasting diet.

  • Eat Stop Eat: Fast for 24 hours once or twice a week. On the other days, eat normally.

  • Alternate-Day Fasting: Consume about 500 calories every other day, then eat normally on the alternate days.

  • 5:2 Fasting: Eat normally for five days of the week and fast for two non-consecutive days .

  • The Warrior Diet: Consume all of your calories within a four-hour window each day.

Intermittent fasting is more about the when than the what. During regular eating windows or days, there are usually no calorie or food restrictions. During fasting times, however, the calorie range is typically between zero and about 500 calories. You call the shots on how to allocate those calories .

So, yes, drinking black coffee during most types of intermittent fasting is totally OK. The popular 16:8 Leangains protocol actually goes so far as to say that coffee with a splash of milk is acceptable in the fasted state .

With just 4.8 calories per medium brewed coffee, it makes sense that a cup of coffee wont do much damage to your metabolism or blood sugar.

Coffee may actually help you speed up weight loss, according to recent research. Bakuradze T, et al. . Fans of bulletproof coffee will also be glad to know that starting their day with this popular creamy brew will not negatively affect the benefits of IF for weight loss or metabolic health purposes. It should be noted that both butter and MCTs are too nutrient-dense for a fast intended to support longevity though, so you may want to stick to black coffee if thats your goal.

Not a coffee person?

If coffee isnt your thing, dont worry you wont be left with only ice water to drink during your fasting window! There are other keto-friendly beverages you can enjoy that wont break your fast.

If youre fasting for metabolic health, weight loss, longevity, or disease prevention, drinking tea is not likely to break your fast. Consider green teas rather than herbal teas, many of which are made from fruit and may contain sugar. Certain teas may be okay for a fast intended to promote gut rest, depending on the type and quantity of tea that you consume.

Keto-friendly bone broth is another good choice for anyone fasting for metabolic health or weight loss. Although most bone broths do contain protein and fats, they arent likely to break a fast unless your goal is gut rest.

Ultimately, drinking coffee during a fast is up to personal preference.

If you dont like coffee or dont currently drink it, theres no reason to start. You can obtain many of the same health benefits from a diet rich in whole, nutritious foods.

Coffee And Fasting The Gritty Details

If you welcome nuance, there is a vast, complicated system of physiological, cellular signaling and metabolic responses to coffee intake to explore. Weve highlighted some of them below.

Some metabolic processes and signaling pathways are activated or increase in the presence of coffee or caffeine, while others are blocked or decrease. To make it more complicated, these effects vary from individual to individual and also from tissue to tissue, cell type to cell type.

Caffeine and other compounds in coffee have one effect on brain cells and another effect entirely on immune cells, for example, even when acting on the same receptors or cellular signaling targets. This is partly because caffeine is a non-selective antagonist or blocker of adenosine receptor activity. Adenosine receptors are extremely common they are found on cells throughout the human body. They have many functions that vary by cell type, playing a role in biological processes as diverse cardiac rhythm and circulation, lipolysis , renal blood flow, immune function, sleep regulation, angiogenesis, inflammation and neurodegenerative disorders.

It can be calculated that the daily consumption of three to four regular cups of coffee results in approximately 50% A1 and A2A receptor occupancy for several hours. Adenosine Receptors as Drug Targets

Let’s Hammer Out The Question: Does Butter Coffee Break The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting

Theres all kinds of internet geekery surrounding fasting, specifically Intermittent Fasting, and I told myself for a while that my morning coffee didnt count. That’s the “ignorance is bliss” method. Eventually I got curious enough to sit and really think about it.

There are some obvious points: A fast means no food. Water is fine and occasional pinches of salt, but thats it. I know, I know. Lots of different fasts are out there, from bone broth fasts to juice fasts , but I think youre kidding yourself if you say youre fasting when youre taking in calories. We’ve done a 5 day water fast and I can tell you: No calories is no joke.

Back to coffee and fasting though. It’s worth it to examine just black coffee by itself. I mean, does coffee break a fast? With only one calorie per cup, should that…count?

C’mon, dawg. If we’re hammering out the facts, even one calorie breaks a fast.

Let’s look at this in two ways. First, fasting means no food intake, and food is measured with calories, so any calories above zero will break a fast. I know, I know, it’s nit-picky, but we’re better off accurately understanding the terrain if we want to successfully get where we’re going.

Second, one of the reasons we fast is to give our guts a break, and coffee definitely doesn’t do that.

Are All Types Of Coffee Fit For Intermittent Fasting

Definitely NO.

Although generally speaking, coffee wont break a fast, it doesnt mean all types of coffee are fit for intermittent fasting. Not want to break your fasting, black coffee is recommended.

You can drink coffee while fasting as long as its black coffee. So it wont have any issue if youve been used to black coffee while you should reconsider your choice if youve been used to flavored coffee.

Coffee nowadays has changed to more of a dessert beverage that is packed with calories. As one of the main benefits of intermittent fasting is weight loss, coffee having cream, sugar, or any type of sweetener should be avoided. Sugar is a monster that will quickly increase your blood sugar level. Therefore, sugar should be avoided being added to your coffee if you are fasting to lose weight.

In addition, coffee is beneficial during fasting as it provides caffeine and will have you up and moving with energy even when you are feeling sluggish because of the lack of food. Caffeine is also the worlds most widely used nootropic . So, drinking coffee during fasting will ensure that your mind is still working properly as well. Therefore, bulletproof coffee is also recommended for weight loss consideration because it contains fat and is sugar and carbohydrates-free.
