Be Prepared For The After
It’s imperative you understand that there will be some weight gain right after the fast. The first few days after breaking your fast, water weight returns as the body rehydrates and begins holding more water to compensate for the salt intake in our normal foods.
This can create a huge emotional let-down to those not expecting it, and in a worst-case scenario lead straight back into over eating.
The figures above for typical fasting weight loss, do reflect the water weight gain that occurs right after the fast. Sustained weight loss being approximately one pound per day of fasting.
Instead of focusing on any discouraging feelings that come up during this weight increase, keep in touch with that feeling of empowerment that can linger after a fast. If you’re looking for it, that clarity and inner knowingness can last for days afterward.
Your Fasting Schedule: How To Use 24
You can experiment and work your way up gradually, but heres a protocol thats worked for lots of people:
Fast for 24 or 36 hours 2-3 times per week.
Keep that up for at least a couple months, and then see how youre doing.
If youd like, you can keep doing time-restricted eating on some of the other days as well. But dont overdo it.
Make sure you FEAST in between fasts. Eat until youre full, and satisfied, including plenty of protein and healthy fats.
One way to know if you ate enough?
Youll have a food baby. Thats a positive sign.
As I mentioned earlier, becoming fat-adapted makes fasting easier. So consider doing keto for a while beforehand.
Once you start doing longer fasts, its really important to keep your electrolytes up as well. Mainly that means getting plenty of salt / sodium, which you can do by drinking bouillon, broth, or other salty things while you fast.
Magnesium and potassium supplements may also be beneficial.

Every Day 10 Minutes Of Physical Activity Is Recommended
Sporting at house can also include a brief variety of steps that take no more than 10 minutes every morning, immediately prior to breakfast. You wouldnt have to have expensive machines. Put your arms out to each side and swing them in little circles to tone your biceps while holding a small 500 mL bottle in each hand.
The goal, like with a cup of coffee or a bath, is to make these 10 minutes a routine for a healthy start to the day. Since youre limited on time, theyll focus on muscle strength rather than cardio. They will also rouse all of your muscles.

Intermittent Fasting: Is It Right For You
U-M dietitian Sue Ryskamp weighs in on intermittent fasting benefits, who it works best for and how to get started
Weight loss can be difficult, but could intermittent fasting help? This eating pattern, which features cycles of fasting and eating, is making headlines as research confirms its not only what you eat, but when you eat, that matters in the struggle to lose weight.
During intermittent fasting, individuals use specific periods of eating typically within an eight-to-10 hour window to lose weight, says Michigan Medicine dietitian Sue Ryskamp, who sees patients at U-Ms Frankel Cardiovascular Center.
The premise behind intermittent fasting is relatively simple, she says: When our insulin levels go down far enough and for long enough, as they do during a fasting period, were able burn off fat.
Insulin levels drop when a person is not consuming food. During a period of fasting, decreasing insulin levels cause cells to release stored glucose as energy. Repeating this process regularly, as with intermittent fasting, leads to weight loss. In addition, this type of fasting often results in the consumption of fewer calories overall, which contributes to weight loss, Ryskamp says.
A Harvard research study also reveals how intermittent fasting may slow the aging process through weight loss, lower blood pressure and reduced cholesterol.

How does intermittent fasting make you lose weight?
When you fast, you consume fewer calories than you normally do or no calories at all. As with the weight-loss basics go, the fewer calories you consume, the more weight you lose.
Intermittent fasting simply helps reduce your overall calorie intake. And this reduction in calorie intake is essentially what causes you to lose weight on IF.
But thats not all.
Fasting also causes several changes in the way your body stores and burns fat.
One is insulin.
Insulin is a hormone that converts your glucose, sugar into energy for fuel. Its a driver of your fat storage and its levels rise when you eat and decrease when you fast.
In short, fasting may drive fat loss, prevent additional fat storage, and result in weight loss.

Include things like meat, fish, poultry, eggs, leafy greens, other non-starchy vegetables, berries, nuts, cheeses, avocados, coconut oil, olive oil, and butter.
Thats not a complete list obviously, but that should give you quite a few options to consider.
Ive also created a really thorough list of simple and easy ketogenic food options, so if youre thinking about trying low-carb check that out as well!
By the way, youll probably need to increase your salt intake on keto as well, because once your insulin level drops youll be peeing out more salt than before.
Tapping Into Ancestral Hunger Part : Top Hacks For The 24 Hour Fast
Believe me when I say that the first time I heard of purposefully foregoing food for an entire day, I was more than apprehensive. After actually fasting for 24 hours, I was pleasantly surprised by both the results of the fast as well as by myself. In part 2 of this blog series on intermittent fasting , we will present the basics of the 24 hour fast, hacks to help you successfully fast, and the top pros and cons of this IF method.
Calorie restriction = Weight loss
Brad Pilon, author of Eat Stop Eat, points out that, Prolonged calorie restriction is the only proven nutritional method of weight loss . While much confusion surrounds diet trends and recommendations, if such a thing as an irrefutable truth exists in the nutrition world, this fact would be it. In order to lose weight, negative energy balance is required . In other words, you must expend more calories than you consume so you can eat less, exercise more, or better yet, combine the two in order to achieve weight loss.
What the 24 hour fast looks like: Once a week, fast for 24 hours. Once the fasting period passes, proceed with eating as if you had not fasted at all. While Eat Stop Eat suggests fasting 1-2 times per week, Im not sure how sustainable two days of fasting in a week is for the average person. When I tried fasting for two whole days, I did not find the same success.
But wait, I have some concerns!

Yes It Definitely Can
A 24-hour fast can help you lose weight. However, it has to be done consistently and not just as a one time fast. Like any other method for weight loss, consistency and being able to fit it in your lifestyle on a regular basis is whats most important.
Some research has been conducted on the subject and show that alternate day fasting show significant weight loss vs control group. In this second study, subjects lost 2.5% of their initial body weight within 22 days of alternate day fasting, while the fat loss mass represented 4% of their initial fat mass. Another finding is that their fasting insulin decreased significantly in comparison to the control group.
It’s All About Changing Patterns

What Can I Eat While Intermittent Fasting
During the times when youre not eating, water and zero-calorie beverages such as black coffee and tea are permitted.
And during your eating periods, eating normally does not mean going crazy. Youre not likely to lose weight or get healthier if you pack your feeding times with high-calorie junk food, super-sized fried items and treats.
But what Williams likes about intermittent fasting is that it allows for a range of different foods to be eaten and enjoyed. We want people to be mindful and take pleasure in eating good, nutritious food, she says. She adds that eating with others and sharing the mealtime experience adds satisfaction and supports good health.
Williams, like most nutrition experts, regards the Mediterranean diet as a good blueprint of what to eat, whether youre trying intermittent fasting or not. You can hardly go wrong when you pick complex, unrefined carbohydrates such as whole grains, leafy greens, healthy fats and lean protein.
How Can I Suppress Hunger During Intermittent Fasting
Eat high-fiber foods, such as nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables, and high protein foods, including meat, fish, tofu, or nuts, during your eating window, Varady advised. Chewing high-fiber gummies can also help.
Drink lots of water. People tend to think they’re hungry, when they are really just thirsty, she said.
Go for black coffee or tea, or cinnamon or licorice herbal teas. These beverages may have appetite-suppressing effects, Varady noted.
Watch less TV: I know this sounds strange, but while you are watching TV, you are bombarded with dozens of ads for food. This can make you feel hungry, when in actuality, you are not hungry at all, she said.
Remember, being “a little hungry” is the best thing that can happen to you, wrote Madelyn Fernstrom, health and nutrition editor at NBC News, calling it a “true mind-body connection” that helps you recognize fullness.
Don’t Exercise For Weight Loss
It’s widely known that exercise and weight loss go hand in hand, right?
So why not do some light exercise to boost your water fasting results, especially if you start feeling that “energy high” after a couple of days?
The problem is, research has shown that if you exercise during a water fast you will destroy your lean body mass at an alarmingly accelerated pace!
And this is true, even if you “only” do light/moderate exercise.
You can find more details in my guide on water fasting ketosis, or more precisely in the part that talks about the consequences of exercising in ketotis).
The bottom line is, you don’t need to lie in bed all day while you’re doing a water fast.
Just do your best to avoid any activities that raise your heart rate, make you start breathing heavily, or require a lot of energy to perform
So things like heavy work, weight lifting, or basically any kind of sports.
And while this wasn’t exactly a tip that can boost your water fasting results, it’s even more important you understand what you’re NOT supposed to do.
Let’s move on to taking a look at what science has to say about how much lean body mass you can lose during water fasting.
Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting
Besides helping in shedding weight, intermittent fasting has proved to carry many benefits and improve health in general.
Weight & Fat Loss
The first clinical study of medical fasting for the treatment of obesity was performed in 1915. The authors reported that short periods of four to six days of fasting is a safe and effective method for reducing body weight in obese humans.
Many people lose weight with intermittent fasting simply because they are cutting out on calorie intake. Skipping meals put your body in a fat-burning situation.
Normally, your body takes energy from the food you consume but when you are fasting and your body has zero calories, the body starts taking energy from the fat and thats when these fat cells are destroyed/burned.
Immune System Boost
Studies show that a 3-day fasting has the ability to reboot the immune system. And I totally agree.
During a fast, our body enters a detoxification stage where fat cells are burning, excess sugar are being swiped out etc..
So, a lot of cleansing is happening. As a result, the body comes out clean and like new.
Heart Function Improvement
It is believed that intermittent fasting improves the heart function. What happens when youre fasting is that your body uses sugar in a different manner, reducing the risk of diabetes and weight gain.
If your body is resting far from these two factors, youre most likely to improve your heart function and health.

Why You May Not See Results
Although there is research supporting the effectiveness of intermittent fasting, there are many reasons you may not see results. It may sound counter-intuitive, but you may not be eating enough calories during your fasting window. If you severely restrict calories, it can backfire. Sudden under-consumption can lead to metabolic adaptation, a process where your body becomes more efficient at using energy and storing fat which means youll burn less calories. The goal is not to count calories and cut them, its to eat minimally processed, nutritious foods during your eating window until you are full.
If you eat ultra-processed, energy-dense foods during your meals, that could be another reason why youre not getting the results you desire. Fasting can help you burn fat, but it doesnt mean that its magic! Remember to fill your plate with lean proteins, complex carbs, and healthy fats.
Finally, make sure you drink plenty of water during your fasting window. Hydration helps you feel full and satiated, and its easy to mistake thirst for hunger. If youre not hydrated when you approach your eating window, you may be prone to choose and eat ultra-processed foods.
The Benefits Of Intermittent Fasting
Fat loss is great, but it isn’t the only benefit of fasting.
1. Intermittent fasting makes your day simpler.
I’m big on behavior change, simplicity, and reducing stress. Intermittent fasting provides additional simplicity to my life that I really enjoy. When I wake up, I don’t worry about breakfast. I just grab a glass of water and start my day.
I enjoy eating and I don’t mind cooking, so eating three meals a day was never a hassle for me. However, intermittent fasting allows me to eat one less meal, which also means planning one less meal, cooking one less meal, and stressing about one less meal. It makes life a bit simpler and I like that.
2. Intermittent fasting helps you live longer.
Scientists have long known that restricting calories is a way of lengthening life. From a logical standpoint, this makes sense. When youre starving, your body finds ways to extend your life.
Theres just one problem: who wants to starve themselves in the name of living longer?
I dont know about you, but Im interested in enjoying a long life. Starving myself doesnt sound that appetizing.
The good news is that intermittent fasting activates many of the same mechanisms for extending life as calorie restriction. In other words, you get the benefits of a longer life without the hassle of starving.
Way back in 1945 it was discovered that intermittent fasting extended life in mice. More recently, this study found that alternate day intermittent fasting led to longer lifespans.
