How Intermittent Fasting Works
There are a few different approaches to intermittent fasting, and its up to you to choose one that works best for you.
You may prefer the 16/8 method of intermittent fasting, where you fast for 16 hours every day and confine your eating to the remaining eight hours. Some people vary this approach to expand the fasting window to 18 hours, leaving six hours for eating. Generally speaking, you can eat what you want during your eating window, although experts would encourage you to make healthy choices.
Or you might prefer the 5:2 approach. With this pattern, you sharply reduce your calorie intake to 500 calories max, two days per week, then eat normally the other five days. Some people even like to alternate fasting days with non-fasting days. The idea is that by limiting when you eat, youll be able to maintain better control over your weight.

Youre Not Getting Enough Caloriesor Youre Getting Too Many
Time-restricted eating is exactly that: Youre restricting the timeframe for eating. While it can be used along with calorie reduction, its not meant to be a diet in itself, says Fung.
If youre cutting way back on calories with fasting, then its likely going to backfire, he adds. Thats because restriction has a tendency to make you swing hard in the other direction, toward a binge. When that happens often enough, you may get stuck in a yo-yo pattern that has been shown to have significantly negative effects on your health, especially on cardiovascular function.
Another potential hazard is overeating, since youre trying to smush all your calories into a shorter timeframe. This doesnt mean youre in a binge every day, but you may be eating more than youd planned because youre concerned about being hungry during your fasting window.

How Much Salt Do You Need While Fasting
Sodium is the main electrolyte lost when insulin levels start to dip down. Some experts estimate that individuals can lose anywhere between 2-5 GRAMS of sodium per day while fasting. Another study found that around 1500 mg of sodium was lost per day while following a 7 day fast. And this doesn’t include if you’re exercising and losing even more sodium via sweat. Sodium is needed to transmit signals from the brain to every part of your body. Because of this, common signs of electrolyte imbalance include fatigue and headache.
I typically prefer to use Celtic Sea Salt in my water during the fasted state to help balance electrolyte levels. I’ll use around 1/4 tsp. in my first glass of water and another 1/4 tsp. after my workout. I also use Celtic Sea Salt in the ACV Sipper before breaking the fast. Simply drinking more water while fasting and not replacing the electrolytes can lead to an even further dilution of electrolytes. The amount needed per person will greatly vary. But one thing that is clearly evident — sodium replacement is vital to maintain electrolyte balance.

Intermittent Fasting And Coke Zero
Although Cola Zero varies in its composition, it always contains aspartame and acesulfame K.
Besides aspartame, the heat-stable sweetener acesulfame-K in zero drinks increases insulin levels to the same extent as glucose, according to studies .
Therefore, coke zero is not suitable for autophagy and weight loss.
Furthermore, zero-calorie sweeteners stimulate cravings in the brain a characteristic that does not fit intermittent fasting .
Accordingly, researchers have found that zero and light drinks instead of regular soft drinks do not lead to the desired calorie reduction because of the increased appetite .
Fasting And Weight Loss
Intermittent fasting isn’t a regimen built around limiting calories , but it can promote weight loss in other ways.
For one, fasting gives your metabolism an overhaul, according to the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. It works on the same principles as a ketogenic diet. By restricting food , you’ll switch your body from burning glucose for energy to burning stored body fat.

A December 2015 review in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology echoed those results by finding that, on average, participants following a fasting diet lost between 7 and 11 pounds in 10 weeks.

How Much Water Do You Need To Drink While Fasting
This information will vary, depending on the type of fast discussed. However, for today’s article, we’re specifically discussing shorter fasts that range from 12-20 hours per day. I typically recommend to my clients to focus on around half of their daily water needs during their morning fast. So going back to that 70 oz. of water per day example, this would equate to a minimum of 35 oz. during the fasted state. If you’re exercising during this time, remember to bump up that water intake by at least another 16 ounces.
But if you stop at this information, then you still will probably experience those pesky Intermittent Fasting headaches. And that’s because you didn’t address the vital electrolyte component.
