Carbonation And Weight Gain

One reason why sparkling water is so popular with dieters is because, when compared to plain water, consuming carbonated beverages on an empty stomach is significantly more filling, Beckerman explains. This is because the carbonation takes up more space in the stomach, and is said to increase both gastric activity as well as heart rate, which can contribute to feelings of fullness. Though its unlikely to have a major impact on satiety over the course of a day, sparkling water may be enough to prevent unplanned snacking in a pinch, she says.

Those who are against flavored sparkling water often point to research, published in the journal Obesity Research and Clinical Practice, which found carbonation might cause weight gain, as a reason to avoid it at all costs. Experts, however, are unconvinced.

In the study, those who drank carbonated water had ghrelin levels six times higher than those drinking regular water, and three times higher than those drinking non-carbonated sodas, Beckerman notes. That doesnt sound great for sparkling water. However, the study didnt account for external factors that could have influenced weight gain such as an unhealthy diet or lack of exercise, she says. The research did not directly tie sparkling water to weight gain.

My Experience Drinking Seltzer Water While Fasting

What SHOULD You Drink During Fasting: ACCEPTABLE LIQUIDS – Dr. Berg

When I first started fasting, I wasnt in the habit of drinking soda water. So I was already pretty experienced with fasting when I started trying it.

Since then, Ive drunk seltzer water during both time-restricted eating and extended fasting, on quite a few occasions. I find it a pleasant distraction, whether Im fasting at work or at home.

I enjoy it because of the carbonation, and the slight flavor. And I havent really noticed any negative effects from drinking it.

Keep in mind though-

While soda water doesnt seem to stimulate any cravings or hunger for me, it might be an issue for someone whos new to fasting.

If youre somewhat of a beginner with fasting, youll want to be cautious with anything that could potentially derail you, including soda water.

What Is Sparkling Water

First, lets explain carbonated beverages in more detail.

Also referred to as fizzywater, sodawater, or carbonatedwater, sparklingwater is standard H2O with carbon dioxide gas within. Some sparkling water manufacturers add the carbonization through geological processes while others will inject the gas using pressurized means.

This gives it bubbles and fizziness much similar soda or diet soda. The acidity of carbonated beverages is also higher compared to drinking a standard glass of non-bubbling water. That said, the acidity shouldnt damage your teeth, as your saliva can neutralize its effects. You dont get that same benefit if you sip on soda.

Potential Health Benefits Of Seltzer Water

Many people enjoy the sensation of drinking carbonated beverages, but unlike tonic water or soda, seltzer water has no sugar, making it a healthier alternative. Research has found several potential health benefits to drinking seltzer water:

Improved Dental Health

Seltzer water is slightly more acidic than still water, but it wonât damage your tooth enamel. In fact, studies have found seltzer water to be 100 times less damaging to your teeth than sodas, which are one of the leading causes of tooth decay and gum disease.

People who experience digestive problems may find some relief from seltzer water. Research indicates that consuming seltzer water may help soothe symptoms of constipation, such as stomach pain and irregular bowel movements.

Seltzer water also has shown promise in relieving indigestion.

Hydration

Early studies indicate that seltzer water is just as hydrating as still water. Seltzer water is an excellent choice for staying hydrated.

Healthy Weight Management

The most prevalent health benefit of seltzer water is its lack of sugar and calories. Seltzer water serves as a refreshing replacement for soda and other sugary drinks that raise the risk of conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Furthermore, seltzer waterâs hydrating qualities help promote healthy weight loss and weight management.
