Black coffee contains roughly 2-3 calories , some trace minerals and very low protein. If you were to think of having 2-3 cups a day, the calories and nutritive values won’t be enough to initiate a metabolic difference that would hamper weight loss. Hence, black coffee can be safely consumed.

Coffee With Coconut Oil: Glucose Readings
When we look at our blood glucose readings and how they were affected by the coconut oil, we see that my glucose started at 79 mg/dL and ended at 78 mg/dL.
Keiths glucose reading at the beginning of the morning was 107 mg/dL and then went up to 120 mg/dL before dropping down to 96 mg/dL at the end.
So did coconut oil knock us out of ketosis or spike our glucose?
Were gonna say no, but the 13-point jump that I had right after drinking the coconut coffee was a finding of concern.
Yeah, and these results were much different than our results with MCT oil.
MCT oil clearly boosted our ketones and dropped our blood glucose.
If you are putting coconut oil in your morning coffee, you are most likely not breaking your fast.
However, we would say you are better off switching to MCT oil. Agree?

No Black Coffee Wont Break Your Fast
The key with fasting is calorie count. As long as food or drink doesnt have calories, it wont break your fast.
That means black coffee is fine to pair with intermittent fasting. Technically it has about 4 calories per cup, due to natural oils and amino acids in the coffee beans but 4 calories is not enough to impact your fasted state.
That said, many coffee additions will break your fast. Milk, cream, collagen protein, sugar, creamer anything with calories will take your body out of fasting mode.
But as long as you drink it black , a morning cup of joe wont interfere with your fasting window. In fact, it may enhance some of the benefits of fasting.

Something all individuals practicing intermittent fasting should be aware of is that caffeine in coffee can reset our daily or circadian biological rhythms. Intermittent fasting also impacts of our circadian rhythms, usually in a positive way if we eat in tune with our daylight and active hours and fast longer overnight. But drinking coffee, especially later in the day, can delay our circadian melatonin rhythms by 40 minutes or more depending on the dose. Cyclic AMP actually plays a role here too the rising and lowering of cAMP levels helps our cells keep time, so to speak. By preventing the degradation of cAMP, caffeine lengthens the period of cellular circadian rhythms.
In other words, when exposed to caffeine our cells go through a kind of jetlag where their days get longer.
In summary, caffeine intake in the form of coffee can impact our circadian rhythms and lower our production of melatonin, the sleep hormone. Its best for this reason to confine your coffee intake to early in the day, especially if improved sleep is one of the benefits youd like to glean from your daily intermittent fasting practice.

How Coffee With Cream And Sugar Affects Fasting
While the safest bet for maintaining your fast is black coffee, some people simply cant stand the taste.
For those who cant live without creamer or sugar, choose high-quality, grass-fed dairy and use as few additives as possible. These will activate your gut, so if youre fasting for gut rest, steer clear.
However, this exception only applies to a splash of cream or sugar in black coffee, not to your favorite latte or cappuccino. Those sugary additives will add calories that can break your fast or kick you out of ketosis, if thats your aim.
