Complete Blood Count (CBC) Test Results Interpretation w/ Differential Nursing NCLEX

A CBC is a commonly performed lab test. It can be used to detect or monitor many different health conditions. Your health care provider may order this test:

  • As part of a routine check-up
  • If you are having symptoms, such as fatigue, weight loss, fever or other signs of an infection, weakness, bruising, bleeding, or any signs of cancer
  • When you are receiving treatments that may change your blood count results
  • To monitor a long-term health problem that may change your blood count results, such as chronic kidney disease

When Should I Call My Doctor

Your provider will review the results of your CBC with you. If you have questions about the results, call your provider.

A note from Cleveland Clinic

Healthcare providers use complete blood counts to manage disease and help you stay healthy. With one sample of blood, CBCs can help screen for hundreds of disorders, conditions and infections. A CBC can detect conditions early, sometimes before you have symptoms, so treatment can start as soon as possible. CBCs are an essential tool in maintaining good overall health.

What Should I Expect During A Complete Blood Count

You dont need to do anything to prepare for a CBC. Your provider cleans your arm and inserts a needle. The needle may sting or pinch a little, but it shouldnt hurt. In infants, providers usually insert the needle into the babys heel.

Through the needle, your provider removes a sample of your blood and collects it in a tube. Sometimes, your provider takes more than one tube of blood.

After drawing blood, your provider removes the needle and places a bandage on your arm. Your provider sends the blood to a lab. Your body quickly rebuilds its blood supply.

When Should I Know The Results Of The Test

Results are usually ready within a few days. Sometimes it only takes 24 hours to get results. Your provider will contact you to explain the results and discuss next steps. If your blood cell counts are outside of the normal range, your provider may order follow-up tests.

What are the normal ranges for a complete blood count?

Hemoglobin normal range:

  • Male : 13.0 – 17.0 g/dL
  • Female : 11.5 – 15.5 g/dL

Hematocrit normal range:

White blood cell normal range:

  • Adult: 5,000-10,000/mL

Cbc Blood Tests Diagnose Deficiencies

CBC Test

Deficiencies of essential nutrients such as iron and vitamin B-12 can cause symptoms such as fatigue and low mood. A CBC blood test helps to diagnose these conditions.

It is possible to diagnose anemia from a CBC blood test. This is a common condition which results in a low red blood cell count and low hemoglobin levels. However, it can also be caused by other diseases, so you may need further tests.

Abnormal red blood cells can help doctors to diagnose specific conditions. For example, sickle-shaped red blood cells are the hallmark of sickle cell disease. Large red blood cells can suggest that a person may have a vitamin B12 or folate deficiency.

My Cbc Report Includes A Result For Immature Granulocytes What Are They

Some automated hematology analyzers report the total number of immature granulocytes present in your blood sample. Immature granulocytes are white blood cells that have not fully developed before being released from the bone marrow into the blood. They may include metamyelocytes, myelocytes, and promyelocytes. These cells are normally only present in the bone marrow because they are precursors of neutrophils, the predominant type of white cells in blood. The presence of immature granulocytes in the blood may occur in various diseases, such as infection or a blood cancer, and thus will often prompt further investigation, which may include additional laboratory testing.

Are There Any Risks From Cbcs

A CBC is a safe procedure with minimal risks. Some kids might feel faint or lightheaded from the test. A few kids and teens have a strong fear of needles. If your child is anxious, talk with the doctor before the test about ways to make the procedure easier.

A small bruise or mild soreness around the blood test site is common and can last for a few days. Get medical care for your child if the discomfort gets worse or lasts longer.

If you have questions about the CBC, speak with your doctor or the health professional doing the blood draw.

Is Fasting For Cbc Blood Test Necessary

A complete blood count consists of the tests mentioned above. One can eat and drink normally before a test. Thus, the simple answer to is fasting required for CBC test, is No. Fasting is only required, if the doctor requests for a chemical panel test to be conducted along with complete blood count. Some of the tests in the chemical panel test like fasting glucose, fasting triglycerides, fasting lipids and glucose tolerance require a patient to fast. This means one needs to avoid drinking and eating any kind of food or drink for about 12 hours before the test. Diabetics who take insulin medications or injections too are asked to stop taking these medications for 12 hours. After the test is complete, they can immediately take their medications or injections. If you are wondering what foods to avoid before having a blood test that needs fasting, then the answer is avoid all foods. Fasting means no food and no drink. One can only have little amount of water. Thus, after your last meal of the day, one is asked not to eat or drink anything. The blood test, is thus, carried out early in the morning, to avoid any trouble to the patient.

You do not need to fast, if you are just getting your blood component analyzed. Until and unless, it is specified by your doctor to fast, you can eat and drink before the test. If you have any doubts, make sure you ask your doctor beforehand, if it is necessary to fast or not.

How Much Does The Test Cost

Complete Blood Count (CBC) Case – Lab Results Interpretation: Thrombocytopenia & Leukocytosis

The cost of a complete blood count depends on several factors, including whether or not the patient is paying out of pocket or has health insurance. Because the CBC is common and has many uses, the cost is often covered by insurance. However, there may still be charges for copays and deductibles.

Talk to your doctor or insurance provider for specific details about expected costs for a complete blood count. If you do not have insurance, a hospital or laboratory administrator may be able to provide information about typical costs for uninsured patients.

Normal Rbc Count Range

Normal red blood cell count ranges are:

  • 4.7-6.1 x 1012/L for adult males
  • 4.2-5.4 x 1012/L for adult females

Meaning of abnormal RBC values

An RBC count greater than normal may be caused physiologically by training or living at high altitudes. Among the many factors or conditions that may cause an abnormally high value there are chronic hypoxia and polycythemia vera.

A low RBC count may be caused physiologically by pregnancy. Among the many factors and conditions that may cause low red blood cell count results are blood loss, hemolysis, anemia and blood cancers.

Are Test Results Accurate

The complete blood count is one of the most common and useful blood tests, and modern laboratory methods make it generally accurate and precise.

However, no tests are perfect. Because the CBC is comprehensive and because many factors can influence blood counts, it is possible to have abnormal results on a CBC that dont necessarily mean that you have a health problem.

You can talk with your health care team to learn more about the accuracy and significance of a CBC test in your specific case.

A regular visit to a doctor and you are asked to carry out a complete blood count test. This blood test is often requested by doctors to make sure their patients overall health is good. The CBC blood test is also known as full blood count or a blood panel test. The test helps in screening many disorders like anemia, infections and even serious disorders like leukemia. This test screens disorders by calculations of the cellular components of the blood. These cellular components include the red blood cells, white blood cells as well platelets present in the blood. Most of the blood tests ordered like a blood glucose test or cholesterol test require one to fast for at least 12 hours. As CBC too is a blood test, it is quite natural and wise to ask if fasting is required.

How A Blood Count Is Done

A sample of blood is taken either by needle from a vein in the arm or from a small stick in the finger. It can also be taken from a central venous line through a catheter in a large vein of the neck, cheek, groin, or arm. In infants, it is taken from the heel of the foot.

The blood is analyzed by a machine in the lab that can count the different cells. Not all the blood will be used in the machine.

If the result is not normal, some of the saved blood can be used to do a blood smear test. With this test, a small drop of blood is spread thinly on a glass slide. The sample is stained with special dyes and then looked at under a microscope. The dye makes it easy to see abnormal changes in the size, shape and number of cells . Your childs health care provider will help you understand the results of the blood test.

Complete Blood Count Testing In Children

CBC tests in adults and children are similar, but there are a few notable differences.

In infants, a blood sample may be taken by pricking their heel with a tiny needle instead of trying to draw blood from a vein.

In addition, many of the test results from a CBC may be interpreted differently based on a patients age. For that reason, it is important to know that the doctor may adjust the reference range listed by the laboratory to match the age of a child.

Path To Improved Health

Hematology – Complete Blood Count (CBC) – Critical Care Labs

When your doctor orders a CBC, there are no special preparations youll need to take before the test. You are not required to fast , unless you are having other tests done at the same time that require it. However, you may want to wear a short-sleeved shirt or one that easily rolls up to expose the lower half of your arm.

You will most likely have to visit a lab to have the test done. The lab could be located in your physicians office, at a hospital, or at an off-site location. At the lab, a phlebotomist will use a needle to collect a vial of blood. The blood is most often collected from a vein on the inside of your elbow or on the back of your hand.

The CBC test takes only a few minutes. The results are usually available to your doctor by the following day. In emergency situations, CBC results can be reported in an hour.

The report will include the number of red blood cells and white blood cells. Red blood cells are important because they carry oxygen throughout your body. A low red blood cell count could mean that you have anemia. White blood cells are warriors that fight infections. A high white blood cell count could mean that you have an infection.

In general, mens blood counts will be slightly higher than those of females because males have more muscle mass. Blood count is also affected by altitude. The higher up you are, the more oxygen you need .

Why Do You Need A Manual Differential Test

Your doctor will order a differential blood count to monitor your health during some types of treatment, as a routine check-up, or if they think you have a problem with your white blood cells. These problems can happen for lots of different reasons.

Your white blood cells are made in your bone marrow, which is the soft, spongy tissue in your bones. Sometimes, your bone marrow stops making enough white blood cells, which can make you sick.

In other cases, you might have something in your body that is destroying your white blood cells faster than you can make them. If your white blood cell count is too low, you have a higher chance of getting an infection because you donât have enough immune cells to help you fight off invaders. This often happens with diseases like HIV, or chemotherapy and radiation treatment for cancer.

Other diseases that affect your blood cell levels include:

  • Blood cancer

Make sure to wear a short-sleeved shirt or a shirt with sleeves that you can easily rollup.

You can typically eat and drink normally before a CBC. However, your doctor may require that you fast for a specific amount of time before the test. Thats common if the blood sample will be used for additional testing. Your doctor will give you specific instructions.

During a CBC, a lab technician will draw blood from a vein, typically from the inside of your elbow or from the back of your hand. The test will take only a few minutes. The technician:

  • cleans your skin with an antiseptic wipe
  • places an elastic band, or tourniquet, around your upper arm to help the vein swell with blood
  • inserts a needle in the your and collects a blood sample in one or more vials
  • removes the elastic band
  • covers the area with a bandage to stop any bleeding
  • Label your sample and send it to a lab for analysis
  • A blood test can be slightly uncomfortable. When the needle punctures your skin, you might feel a prick or pinching sensation. Some people also feel faint or light-headed when they see blood. Afterwards, you may have minor bruising, but it will clear up within a few days.

Most CBC results are available within a few hours to a day after testing.
