So Is Skipping Breakfast Really Healthy
Dr. Oz’s argument largely hinges on whether or not you’ve been fasting prior to breakfast. “I don’t think you should eat breakfast until three to four hours after awaken,” he shared while appearing on Fox & Friends, where he highlighted advice for those who are interested in trying intermittent fasting for the first time. Oz also mentioned a new landmark report published in The New England Journal of Medicine that suggested that fasting diets may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease over time, suggesting that intermittent fasting is healthy “even if you don’t lose weight on it.”
Since intermittent fasting is most often based on the 16:8 model, which means you’re only allowed to eat meals during eight hours of the day, Dr. Oz’s point about skipping breakfast may allow you to enjoy a later dinner. But if you’re not restricting when you’re choosing to eat, skipping breakfast may cause you to make poor decisions later in the day, says Charlie Seltzer, MD, a Philadelphia-based weight loss and fitness expert. “There’s conflicting arguments, in some sense, as there has been research published suggesting that people who have breakfast may maintain a lower weight than those who don’t,” Seltzer says. “But the evidence is clear: If eating breakfast means you’re also eating less throughout the day, then you should eat it. If you start eating breakfast and still are overeating at other meals, then you should consider skipping it.”

How People Get Time Restricted Eating Wrong
My friends, and frequent guests on The Dr. Oz Show, Drs. Michael Crupain and Mike Roizen actually wrote a book that details how time restricted eating works and how it can change your body called, What to Eat When. Theyre the ones who got me on board. Time restricted eating is my favorite iteration of intermittent fasting, and to me, its the easiest to maintain. I want to make sure everyone has the tools they need to try this effective method.
Most people who try this type of intermittent fasting get it wrong, which is so frustrating to me because it has the potential to really change your body for the better. People usually try to eat smaller portions during the day and turn to big portions at night, which I dont agree with. Your body is primed to burn carbohydrates in the morning and to burn fat at night. If you add extra food at night instead of giving your body time to burn fat, it then turns that food into more fat.

You Are When You Eat How Intermittent Fasting Affects Weight Loss
“You are what you eat” is an old adage that gets hammered into our heads at a young age â and for good reason, according to pretty much every health expert on the planet.
Video of the Day
In recent years, though, that mantra has begun to shift a bit: Sure, quality and quantity are clearly very important dietary factors. But many health experts are starting to think that timing may be just as crucial. “We have always focused on what we eat, but almost never on when we eat,” Michael Crupain, MD, MPH, Medical Unit Chief of Staff at âThe Dr. Oz Showâ and author of âWhat to ââEat Whenâ, tells LIVESTRONG.com.
There are a number of reasons why this thinking is changing, Dr. Crupain says, including new scientific findings and the rising popularity of the ketogenic diet and one of its controversial components: intermittent fasting for weight loss.

System 20s Diet And Meals
Meals on System 20 consist of 1/2 cup of beans, 1 cup of greens, and 1 palm-sized protein twice a day.
Snacks are all low-carb, and youre allowed two a day as long as you follow the proper serving sizes. That means one egg, or 1 teaspoon of cocoa nibs , or 1 cup of broccoli, among others
Looking at the two meals and two snacks, the total daily calories on this diet seem to be close to 1000. That is starvation.
Not a diet? Whatevs, Oz.
But it gets worse, because of course it does.
System 20 cuts out all added sugars. Oz claims that sugar has been proven to make you gain weight, increase your risk for heart disease and diabetes, and more.
He puts a disclaimer on this by saying, If you have a sweet tooth, thats ok. System 20 still allows you to have sweet things like dark chocolate and berries just not processed sugar.
I hear fear and diet language in the words allow and processed. Sigh.
Lets get one thing straight. Sugar isnt a healthful food, but we dont eat sugar on its own. People who eat a lot of sugar tend to eat a lot of ultra-processed foods as well. They tend to be more sedentary, and have an overall lower quality diet.
So saying that sugar makes you gain weight and have all sorts of terrible diseases is a gross oversimplification and stretching of the truth, which is actually this:
If your diet is based on ultra-processed foods, this can facilitate weight gain and lead to these conditions.
Um. 10/10 dentists recommend NOT doing this.

Why Is It Effective
According to Dr. Oz, eating your first meal later in the day and finishing your last bite by 7 PM is a simple way to practice intermittent fasting, a strategy he declared the best way to lose weight, prevent disease, and even live longer.
Turns out, eating your food in a smaller time window allows your body to burn off all the blood sugar in your system at which point it begins turning stored fat into ketones to use as fuel. Thats what happens when people go on the keto diet, Dr. Oz explained. But you get this keto benefit while still being able to enjoy carbs.
And as if that werent enough, National Institutes of Health and Johns Hopkins research also shows this style of eating makes cells stronger, providing a dramatic overall health boost. Dr. Oz gives his plan another leg up on keto by loading it with beans. Their starch nixes cravings caused by extreme carb cutting, plus they release metabolism-revving compounds so powerful that, per University of Colorado findings, a bean-rich diet spikes fat burn by 25 percent. The same compounds improve belly-fattening insulin by up to 73 percent.
Skeptical that beans beat keto? In a study at Loma Linda University in California, folks who ate beans at every meal lost as if they were on a keto diet while consuming far more food and far more carbs and getting far more health benefits than their low-carb counterparts!
Secrets From Dr Oz: Why He’s Fasting And Using The Clock To Slow Dementia And Fight Disease
How does Mehmet Oz, M.D., the star of The Dr. Oz Showbeginning its 10th season 17keep healthy, upbeat and way trimmer than the average 58-year-old grandpa? Hell tell you its all a matter of time.
Exciting new discoveries about the timers within our cellstrillions of them, priming our bodies to work efficientlyare transforming health care, Oz says. Science has always been focused on the what: what drugs we give to treat disease, what we eat to lose weight, he says. Up until now, we havent just underestimated time, weve completely ignored its role. Were now starting to see that the when can be just as important.
In fact, using the power of timeto prevent disease and treat itis among the biggest medical breakthroughs Oz has seen since launching his show. And thats saying something, considering hes taped 1,575 episodes about health, healing and the far frontiers of medicine. Heres how time can help us live better.

This Is My Favorite And Easiest Version Of Intermittent Fasting
I love food and I love people. Theres nothing better than catching up with my family and friends over a good meal, but working around other peoples schedules can be difficult especially when Im on a diet that relies on the clock. The diet I maintain is called time restricted eating, which is an iteration of intermittent fasting this is also a big component of my new lifestyle plan, System 20. It might sound difficult, but its easier to do than you think. Heres how I make it work and how you can get started today.
It started back in the 1930s when Cornell researcher Clive McKay found that rodents who consumed less calories led them to live longer, healthier lives. Since then, similar experiments of caloric restriction had shown to prolong the lifespan of worms, fleas, and even monkeys.
Research on caloric restriction and periodic fasting came together in 1945 when researchers at the University of Chicago demonstrated that alternate day fasting improved the lifespan of rodents as well. Thus, the concept of intermittent fasting was born.
The idea behind intermittent fasting is that you eat within a window of time and fast between a window of time. This allows your body to eat in sync with your circadian rhythm, which in turn regulates your metabolism, leading to your body burning more energy instead of storing it as fat.
What Is The System 20 Plan
The doc spent a year getting the guidelines real world-ready, and his efforts paid off. Folks using just a handful of System 20 strategies are able to enjoy cocktails and cheat days while reporting hefty losses . They also improve mood, memory, energy, blood sugar, blood pressure, and much more. As Dr. Oz put it, Its been the most successful plan weve ever rolled out!
Heres what a day on System 20 looks like: You wake up and enjoy coffee with special creamer that boosts fat burn, kills appetite, and jumpstarts energy. Next, use the pep it delivers to do any fun, blood-pumping activity. Youll wait until youre hungry to eat, which means every day is going to be brunch, said Dr. Oz.
Both brunch and dinner will be a mix of nutrient-dense, fat-fighting protein, beans, and greens you can also have an optional cocktail plus low-carb snacks as needed before 7 PM, when you stop eating for the day. At night, look for little ways to relax and rejuvenate and aim to hit the hay a bit early. Its super easy, promised the doc. Its also highly effective.

When You Get Medicine
Another way time influences health: chronotherapy, which considers natural rhythms when treating diseases. This can have powerful effects, especially on how medications work:
Better flu shots. Get yours in the morning, suggests Oz. A large clinical trial found more protective antibodies were created then, versus late afternoon.
Stronger chemo, fewer side effects. Just like any other cell, cancer cells grow and rest on a circadian cycle. Cancer chemotherapy works by attacking rapidly growing cells, Oz explains. By figuring out a cancers rhythm, we may be able to administer drugs at the time when the cancer is most vulnerable to the effects. Lung cancer patients given the drug cisplatin, for example, had fewer side effects when it was timed to work with the kidneys circadian rhythm.
More effective blood-pressure medications. For studies of drugs to lower hypertension, research suggests that using a full 24 hours of blood pressure data to inform a medication schedule can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, Oz says.
Similar research is underway in every corner of medicine. Have past drugs failed because of timing errors? Are some ailments caused by broken body clocks that can be fixed? Last falls Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine went to three scientists who proved how circadian rhythms work right down on the molecular level.
Maintain A Healthy Diet
A healthy diet is always the key to a healthy lifestyle. Its especially important to eat healthy if you are fasting even though youre eating less, you still need to take in the essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients your body needs to function . Try to get the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables, as well as protein and grains, into your daily diet.

Lets Take A Closer Look At System 20
I think we should address the IF part right off the bat, because thats a huge part of System 20.
Intermittent fasting has some pretty solid research going for it, but its not for everyone, especially those with a history of eating disorders, pregnant women, or type-1 diabetics.
Combining it with a very low carb diet like System 20 does, can be super-restrictive and tough to follow. And when something is restrictive and tough to follow, people cant sustain it. Especially when its low in calories, but more on that later.
When you cant sustain a diet, you go back to where you came from. Dont worry though, Im sure Oz will have another miracle cure ready and waiting!
One of the reasons why Oz loves IF is that he claims that it improves longevity. But Instead of posting human research because there is none for IF that looks specifically at lifespan, he posts this:
started back in the 1930s when Cornell researcher Clive McKay found that rodents who consumed less calories led them to live longer, healthier lives. Since then, similar experiments of caloric restriction had shown to prolong the lifespan of worms, fleas, and even monkeys.
Worms, fleas, monkeys, and a 1930s rodent study.
Are people actually reading this stuff and thinking that a worm study proves anything about the human lifespan?!
Fu*k! I think I just sprained my eyeballs from rolling them so hard.
If you dont have the research, dont make the claim. Thats pretty easy to understand.
It May Help Burn More Fat
Intermittent fasting may work for weight loss by prompting your body to burn more fat. That’s because when you go a while without eating, your body runs out of sugar to use for energy and instead starts to burn stored fat, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.
For instance, a small study of 19 people with metabolic syndrome found that fasting for 10 hours each day for three months promoted weight loss and also reduced waist circumference, body fat percentage and belly fat, per December 2019 research in âCell Metabolismâ.
The fasting also helped reduce people’s blood pressure and total cholesterol and improved their sleep, blood sugar and insulin levels.

Level Of Effort: Medium
Apart from eliminating simple sugars, white flour, and certain kinds of fat, the Ultimate Diet gives you flexibility in terms of choosing what to eat from all the food groups.
Limitations: Oz’s “grocery list” is a long one and includes plenty of different foods to fit all taste buds.
Cooking and shopping: Your cooking and shopping routines shouldn’t change much. You should be able to find most of the items at your regular grocery store.
Packaged foods or meals: None required.
In-person meetings: No, but Oz does recommend finding a “weight-loss buddy” such as a spouse, friend, or co-worker and checking in with that person — either by phone or email — every day.
Exercise: Yes. Your exercise routine should include half an hour a day of cardiovascular activity such as walking, plus strength training to build muscles once a week. Ultimately, you can work up to 10,000 steps, or about 5 miles a day.
