How Intermittent Fasting Helps You Lose Weight

In my 3-week intermittent fasting results I spoke in great detail about how things just finally clicked for me regarding my relationship with food.

I still feel the same.

Ive had no issues approaching my diet with discipline and self-control since that epiphany and Im so happy to be here.

I only ate when hungry, and then just lean foods!

Tons of fruit, oats, beans, lean meat and veggies.

Still not eating as many veggies as Id like, but we did just subscribe to Imperfect Produce and our first box has arrived.

So far it seems good, but well see over time!

It looks like a good way to get different veggies I wouldnt normally pick up at the store onto our plates!

How Long Does Intermittent Fasting Take To Work

Updated on Medically reviewed byKimberly Langdon, MD

Picture this, you are new to intermittent fasting. Each day you climb the scale, looking for a difference in your body weight, yet the figures remain relatively the same.

Now, you are probably worrying. You might be wondering if you are doing it right. Knowing how soon to expect results with intermittent fasting might help you become more patient with this diet.

So, how long does it take?

Tips For Fighting Appetite

I know, sometimes you just want to devour your entire fridge after a long fast. Truth be told, the feeling of hunger will get worse if you choose to incorporate exercise. Dont let that scare you though, there are several ways to curb your appetite when you have a few hours left.

  • Caffeine Whether youre getting it as black coffee or zero-calorie pre-workout, caffeine is fantastic. There is probably no greater supplement for suppressing your appetite. If you can tolerate caffeine, its certainly a good tool to utilize when fasting.

  • Go to sleep shortly after your last meal The best way to prevent those late-night cravings is to go to bed early. Generally, this implies getting some shut-eye shortly after your last meal. In doing so, you will likely not feel as hungry because youre awake for less time.

  • Drink a lot of water Filling your stomach with water is the best way to curb your appetite. Aim for 64-128 fluid ounces of water each day, and drink a glass each time you feel the hunger coming on. Water is your best friend when youre fasting because its zero calories and great for bodily function.

  • Make your last meal your largest This is completely up to preference, but eating a large final meal will keep you full if you have a busy night ahead of you. Of course, you dont want to binge eat, but try to fill yourself up with your last meal. This especially applies if you workout after dinner.

How Does Fasting Benefit Your Health

The Chicago team tracked the three groups for 10 weeks. The study measures participants weight, insulin resistance, oxidative stress, blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, and inflammatory markers.

Researchers say participants in both fasting groups lost about three percent of their body weight. Though participants were not instructed to reduce their calorie intake, both groups did drop their calories counts by over 550 calories each day. The results show that fasting dieters also have less insulin resistance and lower levels of oxidative stress. Fasting seems to have no effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and triglycerides.

The findings of this study are promising and reinforce what weve seen in other studies fasting diets are a viable option for people who want to lose weight, especially for people who do not want to count calories or find other diets to be fatiguing, lead author Krista Varady says in a university statement.

Intermittent Fasting: How To Best Use It For Weight Loss ...

You can pick an 8 hour window to suit your day. So, for example it could be between 10am 6pm or 11am 8pm and so on. Plus, you can still drink tea and coffee outside of those hours too, although because of the benefits of drinking water you are also encouraged to stay as hydrated as possible.

Most people choose to fast through the night, and opt to eat their first meal at about 11am or in the middle of the day.

Tom says, The most common hours adopted for the eating period is 12 till 8pm. The reason for this is because people arent normally that hungry in the morning, you dont want to be consuming too many calories during the evening and this allows us to eat our lunch and dinner as well as a healthy snack.

Intermittent Fasting Can Be Hard But Maybe It Doesnt Have To Be

Initial human studies that compared fasting every other day to eating less every day showed that both worked about equally for weight loss, though people struggled with the fasting days. So, its very reasonable to choose a reduced calorie plant-based, Mediterranean-style diet. But research suggests that not all IF approaches are the same, and some IF diets are indeed effective and sustainable, especially when combined with a nutritious plant-based diet.

We have evolved to be in sync with the day/night cycle, i.e., a circadian rhythm. Our metabolism has adapted to daytime food, nighttime sleep. Nighttime eating is well associated with a higher risk of obesity, as well as diabetes.

Based on this, researchers from the University of Alabama conducted a study with a small group of obese men with prediabetes. They compared a form of intermittent fasting called “early time-restricted feeding,” where all meals were fit into an early eight-hour period of the day , or spread out over 12 hours . Both groups maintained their weight but after five weeks, the eight-hours group had dramatically lower insulin levels and significantly improved insulin sensitivity, as well as significantly lower blood pressure. The best part? The eight-hours group also had significantly decreased appetite. They werent starving.

Just changing the timing of meals, by eating earlier in the day and extending the overnight fast, significantly benefited metabolism even in people who didnt lose a single pound.

What To Do When Water Fasting To Burn Fat Cells

In the last section, we introduced water fasting, a type of intermittent fast thats come up frequently on this blog. When you drink water, it travels to your bodys cells to keep them hydrated. To speed up water absorption, sip on an empty stomach, such as being on a water fast.

Besides losing weight through calorie restriction on a water fast, you also rejuvenate and detoxify your system, sort of like hitting a giant reset button. Your liver begins breaking down toxins and your digestive system works better due to the oxygen content in water.

As we said before, water fasts can last 24 to 72 hours for the most disciplined fasters. Others water fast off and on so they can maximize their fasting time. Such was the case of a man who fasted for 382 days straight. Weve talked about this on the blog, but its a fascinating story that deserves another mention.

The man, who was 27 at the time of his fast, weighed 456 pounds when he started. For over a year, he consumed supplements and water. He weighted 180 pounds by the time he was done.

If you are eating between water fasting periods, youre probably doing so nutritiously. While you may supply some glucose to your system, the water fasting periods should burn through this.

Water fasting can change that, too. Our insulin sensitivity increases, meaning our body keeps better track of the insulin it produces and does not make more than necessary.

What Are The Proposed Health Benefits Of Fasting Diets

How Long Does Intermittent Fasting Take To Work? [2021]

As mentioned, the research on intermittent fasting is limited, but mice studies and small studies in humans suggest the approach may in fact be effective.

For example, in one of Varadys studies, published in June 2018 in Nutrition and Healthy Aging, 23 human participants completed 12 weeks of eight-hour time-restricted eating, and researchers compared their weight loss results to a control group from a separate trial.

Varady and her team observed that the time-restricted group lowered their body weight by 3 percent more on average compared with the control group, and they significantly lowered their systolic blood pressure. But the sample size was small, and the dropout rate among the fasting group was high, at 26 percent, for even a short-term trial, though no one in this group reported dropping out due to issues with the diet, researchers wrote.

But what about alternate-day fasting? While Varady hasnt conducted studies directly comparing alternate-day fasting to time-restricted eating, another one of her studies, published in July 2017 in JAMA Internal Medicine, showed that alternate-day fasting was difficult to stick with and didnt result in better weight loss or heart benefits than a calorie-restricted diet. For the study, she and her team randomized 100 participants to follow one of the two diets or a control group, where their diets remained the same, for one year.

So Is Intermittent Fasting As Good As It Sounds

According to metabolic expert Dr. Deborah Wexler, Director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Diabetes Center and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, says “there is evidence to suggest that the circadian rhythm fasting approach, where meals are restricted to an eight to 10-hour period of the daytime, is effective.” But still she recommends that people “use an eating approach that works for them and is sustainable to them.”

So, heres the deal. There is some good scientific evidence suggesting that circadian rhythm fasting, when combined with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can be a particularly effective approach to weight loss, especially for people at risk for diabetes.

    What Is 20/4 Intermittent Fasting

Successful weight management is based on counting calories. If your goal is to slim down, you need to reduce your caloric intake and create a caloric deficit if you want to bulk up, you need to make sure that you eat a calorie surplus and if you simply want to maintain your current weight, you continue following your regular diet. But what if you dont like counting calories? Is there a diet that can help you reach your weight goals without having to track the energy contents of your every meal? Luckily, there is! The so-called diet in question is known as intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that has been widely accepted by many people trying to lose weight. Of all the different methods to do it, intermittent fasting 20/4 is one of the stricter versions. What are some intermittent fasting 20/4 benefits? Is intermittent fasting 20/4 everyday healthy and sustainable long-term? Read on to find out this and more.

The intermittent fasting 20/4 method is also known as The Warrior Diet. This diet was created in 2001 by Ori Hofmekler, an Israeli Special Forces member turned health and fitness author. It is important to note that the warrior diet is not based on science but rather a deduction of Oris experiences while he worked in the military .

Also, some supporters of this eating pattern claim that humans are natural nocturnal eaters and that eating at night allows the body to gain nutrients in line with its circadian rhythms .

    A Different Gut Microbiome Profile

Weight Loss: How Intermittent Fasting Works (Science) | Jason Fung

Time-restricted feeding has also been shown to modify the gut microbiota, or the collection of microorganisms living in the gut. Like other aspects of our metabolism, our gut microbiomes ideally change routinely throughout a 24-hour period, according to a circadian rhythm that is largely dictated by when we eat. In fact, the daily cycling of the gut microbiome is thought to be a biological clock of sorts. This clock helps regulate metabolic activity in various tissues throughout our body, including our brain.

Weve known for a long time that what we eat can change our gut microbiota. But many animal studies have revealed that when we eat can also impact our gut microbes. According to a 2020 study, mice that fasted for 16 hours every day for 30 days showed increased levels of Akkermansia and reduced levels of Alistipes bacteria, compared to mice that werent subjected to fasting. More Akkermansia and less Alistipes are associated with reduced intestinal inflammation and decreased fat accumulation in the liver. Therefore, many of the benefits of fasting likely come from the alteration of our gut bacteria.

Why When You Eat Matters According To Scientific Research

In a study published in Obesity Journal, researchers randomized 93 overweight and obese women into two groups who ate the same foods. One group ate half their 1,400 daily calories for breakfast. The other group ate half their calories for dinner. While both groups lost weight, compared with the nighttime calorie group, the morning calorie group lost more weight, reduced their waist circumference by more, and lowered their fasting glucose and insulin levels by more.

Timing is everything when it comes to eating, Peeke says. We now realize that we spent so much time studying how much we eat, we never paid enough attention to when we eat.
