  • Whole grains: Barley, brown rice, buckwheat, farro, grits, millet, oats, popcorn, quinoa, rice cakes, rye, sorghum, spelt, whole wheat, whole-wheat pasta, and wild rice.
  • Beans and legumes: Black beans, black-eyed peas, cannellini beans, garbanzo beans , great northern beans, kidney beans, lentils, peanuts, pinto beans, and split peas.

What You Can Eat On The Daniel Fast

The Daniel Fast is essentially a vegan diet, but dont go searching the grocery aisles for Impossible Burgers and almond milk ice cream quite yet. The fast is a whole foods, plant-based diet, emphasizing consumption of foods in their least processed form. Heres whats allowed on the menu:

Fruit: Fresh or frozen, and low-glycemic fruits in particular are encouraged. Low-glycemic fruits include berries, apples, peaches, grapefruit, cherries, and grapes. Canned fruit is also an option, but only if there is no added sugar, coloring, or other preservatives.

Vegetables: Fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables are all allowed on the diet plan, as long as there is no added salt. You can eat theseand even potatoesin abundance.

Whole Grains: Go easy on the processed varieties and focus on cooking unrefined whole grains such as amaranth, barley, brown rice, quinoa, millet, oats, and wheat.     All subjects were instructed to maintain their normal diet until they began the fast and to record on data forms all food and beverage consumed during the seven days immediately prior to the start of the fast. Subjects were also asked to record food and beverage intake during the final seven days of the fast. A technician reviewed in detail the nutritional records with each subject upon receipt. Records were analyzed by using Food Processor SQL, version 9.9 . Regarding physical activity, subjects were instructed to maintain their normal habits during the entire study period.     In addition to how long the fast lasts, there is the dietary restrictions that Daniel implemented. He ate no delicacies, meat, or wine. Essentially, he only ate fruits, vegetables, and whole foods. The diet is reminiscent of the foods that God gave for man to eat when the world was created. Genesis 1:29 says, And God said, Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

    We know that there is no condemnation for those who decide to eat or exclude certain foods from their diet. Scripture doesnt really go into detail about why Daniel only ate the foods he ate, so this is of course my speculation only. But I believe that Daniel wanted to make his body as pure as possible. Meat, delicacies, and wine are all foods that are manipulated by man for consumption. Everything that Daniel ate are things that can be eaten without being changed by humans!

    Day 13 Pray The Scripture

    One of the most powerful things you can do while praying and fasting is to pray the scriptures. Daniels prayer in the 51st Psalm is a great example of how to do that. Just apply a Psalm, or another example of a prayer in the Bible, to your own life, even inserting your own name or just pray in the first person. It is powerful! God will bring things to your mind as you pray the prayer of another and catapult you into deep prayer and praise.

    May Lead To Stomach Discomfort

    If youre not used to eating a high fiber diet, you may experience stomach discomfort during the Daniel Fast.

    Most approved food items, such as vegetables, fruit, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds, are high in fiber. While fiber is beneficial to your health, too much of it can be difficult to digest, leading to stomach upset, bloating, and in some cases, constipation .

    Although you can relax physically, do not relax spiritually! You cant afford to. Your enemy, the devil, prowls like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour . You must remain alert and vigilant. The thief will be on the prowl to steal the increased intimacy with Christ youve gained during your fast.

    No doubt, as youve fasted and subjected your flesh to the Spirit, your spiritual ears have become more alert to the voice of the Holy Spirit. Consequently, youre now far more sensitive to even the smallest disobedience and sin in your lifemaybe even things you used to do on a daily basis that grieved Him and quenched His presence. Satan will now try to get you to cater to your flesh once again. Hell try to clog your spiritual hearing and get you back into areas of disobedience and unyieldedness. Oh it will be subtle all right. It wont even seem like its happening. After all, eating returns to normalwhy not everything else? Be careful! Be alert! Be intentional! Be disciplined, fellow soldier. Stay disciplined in your prayer time and pursuit of God. Stay disciplined in your submission and quick obedience to the Lord.

    What Do You Eat On The Daniel Fast

    Like anything with limited-known details, this fast is open to interpretation. So prayerfully start the fast in the way God would have you do it.

    If you take out the food Daniel avoided, its generally believed that you would be allowed to eat only:

    • Vegetables All veggies and vegetable juices of any type
    • Fruit All types of fruit and fruit juices
    • Beans & Legumes All types of beans and legumes, but avoid anything canned with added salt
    • Wholes Grains Brown rice, oats, whole wheat, millet, amaranth, barley, and any other natural whole grains
    • Nuts & Seeds Raw is best, nothing with added sugar, salt, or other seasoning

    The main struggle for me is forgoing all seasoning. I admit that I didnt follow that rule this time, but to get the full effect, and the full intention of the fast: avoid seasoning.

    Also avoid all sweeteners, because theyre purely added as a pleasantry, and I think that blatantly violates the fast. Avoid stimulants as well, such as caffeine and nicotine. So even black coffee is typically forbidden on this fast.

    • Animal products: All meat, dairy, seafood, and eggs.
    • Sweeteners: Agave nectar, artificial sweeteners, brown rice syrup, brown sugar, cane juice, corn syrup, honey, malt syrup, molasses, raw sugar, sugar, and other syrups.
    • Leavened bread: Bread made with yeast.
    • Refined and processed foods: Foods that contain artificial flavorings, artificial preservatives, food additives, white flour, and white rice.
    • Deep-fried foods: All fried foods.
    • Solid fats: Butter, lard, margarine, and shortening.
    • Chocolate: Milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, dark chocolate, chocolate syrup, and cacao.
    • Some beverages: Alcohol, coffee, and other caffeinated beverages.

    Heart Rate And Blood Pressure

    Following completion of the above questionnaire, subjects were asked to void. Women performed a urine pregnancy test to confirm that they were not pregnant, as pregnant women were not allowed to participate in this study due to potential fetal radiation exposure with the dual energy x-ray absorptiometry scan. Subjects were then seated in a chair with a blood pressure cuff placed on their left arm.     If youve been on a full fast for twenty-one days, be careful how you reintroduce food to your system. Most people who are otherwise healthy should be able to return to normal eating within one week of a twenty-one day fast.

    There is a period of adjustment, though. This is because two things have happened to the digestive system during a prolonged fast.

  • The stomach has been slowly shrinking. By the end of the fast, the stomachs capacity for food is nothing like it was at the beginning. Even the smallest amount of food can make you feel full.
  • The organs in the body that are usually involved with assimilating food have taken a rest. You could think of it as if the organs have gone into a kind of sleep which became deeper as the fast was extended.

  • Give your stomach time to return to normal size and the digestive organs time to wake up fully.

    When breaking a fast, some foods are more suitable than others. A fast of great length is best broken with fruit or vegetable juices, if possible freshly squeezed or juiced. Some consider citrus fruits to be the best. However, if you live where citrus fruits are imported, this is not the best option as theyre often picked unripe and the juice can be too acidic. Watermelon juice is excellent, as is tomato, grape or apple juice.
