Intermittent Fasting Can Still Lead To Weight Gain

How Does Intermittent Fasting Work for Weight Loss

Feeling starved during your fasting period might make some people more prone to binging behaviors when theyre not fasting. And eating more calories than what your body burns will lead to a long-term increase in body fat even if you consistently fast for 12-16 hours each day.

In other words, if you are having trouble maintaining your hunger and end up going completely rogue on your non-fasting periods, you could end up gaining weight.

Going rouge during your non-fasting periods can sabotage your health goals, start a meal prep routine or plan your meals to ensure you’re nourishing your body.

Recommended Foods And Tips

While the 16:8 intermittent fasting plan does not specify which foods to eat and avoid, it is beneficial to focus on healthful eating and to limit or avoid junk foods. The consumption of too much unhealthful food may cause weight gain and contribute to disease.

A balanced diet focuses primarily on:

  • fruits and vegetables, which can be fresh, frozen, or canned
  • whole grains, including quinoa, brown rice, oats, and barley
  • lean protein sources, such as poultry, fish, beans, lentils, tofu, nuts, seeds, low fat cottage cheese, and eggs
  • healthful fats from fatty fish, olives, olive oil, coconuts, avocados, nuts, and seeds

Fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are high in fiber, so they can help keep a person feeling full and satisfied. Healthful fats and proteins can also contribute to satiety.

Beverages can play a role in satiety for those following the 16:8 intermittent fasting diet. Drinking water regularly throughout the day can help reduce calorie intake because people often mistake thirst for hunger.

The 16:8 diet plan permits the consumption of calorie-free drinks such as water and unsweetened tea and coffee during the 16-hour fasting window. It is important to consume fluids regularly to avoid dehydration.

So How Does If Work For Weight Loss Exactly

Intermittent fasting is about when you eat, says Charlotte Martin, MS, RDN, CPT, owner of Shaped by Charlotte, LLC. Depending on the IF approach, youre either shortening the eating window each day, or engaging in about 24-hour fasts one or more times a week. One of the most popular approaches is the 16:8 method, which is when you fast for an 16-hour window, like from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. the next day.

Essentially, by restricting your food intake to a shortened time window, you naturally decrease your caloric intake and, in turn, can lose weight. “Not only are you taking in fewer calories, but youre also slowing down your insulin pump, which may boost fat burn,” explains Martin.

So If Im *not* Losing Weight With If Whats The Problem

There could be a few reasons. Here are 12 intermittent fasting mistakes that you might be making, and how to fix them.

1. Youre eating too much during your eating window.

As mentioned, in general, Weight loss essentially boils down to calories in versus calories out, reminds Martin. If you end up consuming the same number of calories during your eating windows as before you started intermittent fasting, then you wont lose weight.

In other words, if you just pack all of the calories you’d normally eat into your eating window, you’re not really changing your diet at all.

How to fix it: Try a calorie-counting app. Although I dont typically recommend calorie counting, it may help to track your caloric intake for a few days using a calorie-tracking app,” says Martin. “These apps will usually tell you the approximate daily calorie amount you need to be at in order to lose weight. Although these estimations are usually off, they can be used as a good starting point.” The app can also reveal meals or specific foods that have more calories than you’d expect, and you can adjust your diet accordingly.

2. You are not consuming enough calories on non-fasting days.

When you dont consume an adequate amount of calories on non-fasting days, your body may conserve the energy you consume, rather than burning it, says Smith.

3. Youre eating less-nutritious foods.

Intermittent Fasting Vs Calorie Restriction

Intermittent fasting

Hereâs where it gets tricky: calorie restriction can also lead to weight loss and changes in cardio-metabolic markers.

Some mouse studies have kept calories constant to evaluate intermittent fasting independently and only changed the feeding schedule. They have compared a regime of caloric restriction with intermittent fasting to a regime of calorie restriction alone. These studies have yielded somewhat mixed results, so there are no clear answers to be had there.

More research is needed, but so far, it seems some forms of intermittent fasting could be a good alternative or can supplement the possible health benefits of calorie restriction.

One human study on intermittent fasting, which involved changing only the timing of peopleâs meals without any calorie restriction, found very negligible results for participants.

This interplay can make it hard to know whatâs really behind the weight loss, blood pressure changes, insulin and glucose regulation, and other effects seen in research and people who follow intermittent fasting regimens. Is it the timing, or the reduction in calories that yields results?

âI think thatâs mainly just driven by people eating less.â

Three of the five fasters Inverse interviewed also practice a ketogenic diet, have cut out certain foods , or exercise while intermittent fasting, which may contribute to their results.

But Longo tells Inverse that this kind of drastic restriction isnât recommended.

What Happens Inside The Body

In seeking to understand exactly how weight loss and muscle gain work, it is essential to discuss the chemicals/hormones in the body that are responsible for these processes. It is the releasing of these different types of hormones that determine whether we are in burn mode or build mode, which is all determined by how much sugar we have in our blood at a certain time of the day.

Dont worry about trying to reason out exactly how these hormones interact, as scientists are still unraveling the complex way that they affect/trigger each other. The point is to understand that there is a very concrete reason that intermittent fasting works so well.

You Are Not Eating Enough Protein

If you find that your meals cannot carry you across your fasting period to your next eating window, then you might need to adjust your diet.

Consider including more lean protein in your diet. It does not matter the type of protein, vegan or animal protein, all are fine.

Proteins can help keep you full till your next meal. Furthermore, if you are exercising during this period, proteins are important for building your muscles and protecting your bone health.

Your meals should have healthy fats, carbs, leafy greens, and proteins.

Restrictive Eating Can Influence Disordered Eating

Any diet that supports skipping meals or restrictive eating can trigger some not-so-great food relationships. Especially when the positive weight loss effects are directly impacted by not eating, or restricting food intake.

This isn’t a great mindset to go into fasting with and can lead some people to take intermittent fasting too far, developing disordered eating patterns, or getting caught up in a yo-yo dieting cycle.

Not to mention that not eating enough calories each day to meet your basic needs can lead to nutrient deficiencies, decrease your immunity and create havoc in your body.

Make sure you’re being honest with yourself before trying any kind of fasting practice and consult with your practitioner beforehand as a mindful or intuitive eating approach may be a better option.

Whatever your reason for wanting to intermittent fast, remember to incorporate basic nutrition principles including calorie control and a balanced diet to set yourself up for success.

Ketosis With Intermittent Fasting Step

Does Intermittent Fasting Really Work? (and Why?)

You will need to think of the right schedule for your lifestyle and experiment to see what works best for you.

Kickstart Ketosis

If you are just getting started with intermittent fasting, I suggest you start with the fasting mimicking diet or the keto diet. If you choose the keto diet, you may only need a few days as well. You will most likely get the keto flu and when you feel better, you will be in ketosis.

If you choose the fasting mimicking diet, you may not notice a difference the first time around. Keep experimenting with intermittent fating the rest of the month and you will notice that when you do the fasting mimicking diet again , it will be a lot easier. You will achieve ketosis.

Choose Your Intermittent Fasting Schedule

For some people, it takes more than 16 hours to get in ketosis using intermittent fasting. Testing could be helpful. I use this ketone monitor :

You are in ketosis when your reading is anything above 0.5 mmol/L. With time, you will know the difference without even measuring.

Start gradually, fast from 8 pm to noon the next day for 2-3 weeks, and see if you notice a difference. If you dont, increase your fasting window or try a different intermittent fasting method that doesnt require daily fasting like the Eat-Stop-Eat Diet.

Don’t Miss: Can I Eat Whatever I Want While Intermittent Fasting

What Is The 1: 8 Diet

The 16:8 diet is a type of time-restricted fasting done to achieve better health or lose weight.

On the 16:8 diet, you spend 16 hours of each day consuming nothing but unsweetened beverages like water, coffee, and tea. The remaining eight-hour window is when you eat all of your meals and snacks. Most people do this by starting a fast at night, skipping breakfast, and eating their first meal in the middle of the day. No foods are inherently off limits during that time, but some people will follow the keto diet at mealtimes to supercharge their weight loss.

While the term intermittent fasting may be new to many of us, the practice isnt all that different from the way our ancestors likely lived: Hunt, gather, and eat during daylight sleep and fast during darkness.

Your Fasting Window Is Too Short

If you want to notice a difference in your body weight, your eating window during your intermittent fasting diet should be significantly less than normal.

If the difference between your eating window before and during intermittent fasting is only an hour or two, you might barely notice significant weight loss.

A 14-hour fasting window with a 10-hour eating window seems like a great place to start. However, if you find the 14 hours to be too long, you could start with a shorter fasting duration and work your way up.

It All Sounds A Bit Magical

According to intermittent fasting proponents, people can experience a range of health benefits just by doing one simple thing: changing when they eat.

For anyone whos struggled to consistently stick to a regimented diet, not worrying about what to eator even how to eatcan certainly sound heavenly.

Still, if youre going to go a long time without food, you kinda want to know that your efforts will pay off.

Does IF actually work? If so, why? And for whom?

In this chapter, well attempt to answer those questions.

Well dive into the science of everything IF, shedding light on:

Lets start with the top question most people have:

How To Do It

The 2 Reasons Why Intermittent Fasting for Fat Loss Works ...

The easiest way to follow the 16:8 diet is to choose a 16-hour fasting window that includes the time that a person spends sleeping.

Some experts advise finishing food consumption in the early evening, as metabolism slows down after this time. However, this is not feasible for everyone.

Some people may not be able to consume their evening meal until 7 p.m. or later. Even so, it is best to avoid food for 23 hours before bed.

People may choose one of the following 8-hour eating windows:

  • 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • noon to 8 p.m.

Within this timeframe, people can eat their meals and snacks at convenient times. Eating regularly is important to prevent blood sugar peaks and dips and to avoid excessive hunger.

Some people may need to experiment to find the best eating window and mealtimes for their lifestyle.

What Can I Eat While Intermittent Fasting

During the times when youre not eating, water and zero-calorie beverages such as black coffee and tea are permitted.

And during your eating periods, eating normally does not mean going crazy. Youre not likely to lose weight or get healthier if you pack your feeding times with high-calorie junk food, super-sized fried items and treats.

But what Williams likes about intermittent fasting is that it allows for a range of different foods to be eaten and enjoyed. We want people to be mindful and take pleasure in eating good, nutritious food, she says. She adds that eating with others and sharing the mealtime experience adds satisfaction and supports good health.

Williams, like most nutrition experts, regards the Mediterranean diet as a good blueprint of what to eat, whether youre trying intermittent fasting or not. You can hardly go wrong when you pick complex, unrefined carbohydrates such as whole grains, leafy greens, healthy fats and lean protein.

How To Get Started With Intermittent Fasting

There are several types of intermittent fasting you can follow:

  • The 16/8 or Leangains Method: Fast for 16 hours per day and eat in the remaining 8-hour window. Most people will skip breakfast and eat from 1pm to 9pm for example.
  • The 5:2 Diet: Eat normally for 5 days of the week, but only eat up to 600 calories on the other two days.
  • Eat-Stop-Eat or Spontaneous Fasting: Fast for a 12 or 24 hour period multiple times per week. There is no real schedule for this one.
  • Alternate Day Fasting: Fast for one day and eat normally the next day. Continue to alternate days of fasting and normal eating.

/8you Skip Meals When You Should Be Eating

Intermittent fasting is all about fasting when you’re supposed to and eating during the allotted eating window. But if you continue to fast and skip meals even when you’re supposed to eat, then you’re sabotaging your own goals and plans. This will only make you weak and in time, will deprive you of the energy to continue.

Intermittent fasting is an eating pattern that has become popular among people looking to lose weight.

While some people claim that intermittent fasting can be a safe and healthy way to shed excess weight, others dismiss it as ineffective and unsustainable.

This article explains whether intermittent fasting works for weight loss.

How To Start Intermittent Fasting

If you’ve never fasted before, it takes some getting used to. Here are some tips to help you get started:

  • Talk to your doctor. Some medications don’t mix well with fasting. For example, fasting while taking the sulfonylurea class of diabetes medications can be dangerous, as fasting can significantly increase the risk of low blood sugars. Certain other medications must be taken with food to be absorbed properly. People with cancer, or people on many medications usually shouldn’t fast. Talk to your doctor before starting to fast as she or he may recommend against it or need to adjust certain medications before you start fasting
  • Get the right nutrients. While trying to lose weight, make sure to eat lots of vegetables and lean protein. This combination can maintain nutrition and help you feel full longer. Limit simple sugars and simple carbohydrates like sweets, pop, and white bread
  • Watch out for symptoms. Some people have symptoms such as headaches, mood changes, decreased energy levels or constipation when they start fasting. These symptoms may resolve over time as your body gets used to your new schedule. However, not everyone can tolerate fasting well and generally any significant symptoms should result in cessation of a fast
  • Start small. A simple way to start fasting would be to not eat anything after supper . After establishing that as a regular habit, you can start eating breakfast later and later until you can skip it or combine it with lunch

    Supports Brain Health And Function

Intermittent fasting may help improve memory and mental performance and support brain health/function by protecting neurons in the brain against deterioration and dysfunction .

Emerging evidence suggests that intermittent fasting could be a useful intervention in neurodegenerative diseases such as epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease, and stroke .

Keep in mind that it’s not simply the act of fasting alone that may have these potential benefits, decreased inflammation, reductions in body fat, and healthier blood sugar levels have all been linked to healthy brain function.
