What SHOULD You Drink During Fasting: ACCEPTABLE LIQUIDS – Dr. Berg

A good rule of thumb when calculating your daily water needs is to aim for half your weight in ounces per day. For example, if you weigh 140 pounds, then you would aim for 70 oz. of water per day. However, if you are exercising or you live in a hot area where you’re prone to sweat, you may want to add an additional 16 oz. or more per day to replace the water lost via sweat. One area that is rarely discussed when talking about water is salt replacement. This is especially important while fasting. We’ll be discussing this in more detail later in this article.

Is 1: 8 Fasting Healthy

Intermittent fasting 16:8 has not been shown to be harmful to the average healthy person, says Michal Mor, PhD, co-founder and head of science at Lumen .

Fasting has been shown to help individuals restrict their caloric intake and lose weight and may also reduce the risk of obesity-related health conditions such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, as well as some chronic diseases.

Whilst studies, such as one published in the Canadian Family Physician journal, have shown that intermittent fasting can lead to weight loss in the short term, a review in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition suggests that this is due to an energy deficit created from limiting your eating window, says Jones. There may also be some considerations for fasting women.

Put simply, if you can only eat for a short period of time, youre less likely to eat as much. Of course, this depends on the foods you eat. You could eat very calorie-dense foods, which are unlikely to leave you in an energy deficit. But ultimately, there isnt strong evidence that intermittent fasting is superior to the standard calorie restriction diet. Many studies have found intermittent fasting and traditional calorie restriction have similar weight loss outcomes.

According to a study published in Nutrients , theres also mixed evidence on the health benefits of intermittent fasting for cardiovascular disease risk factors, says Jones, with more research needed before we can conclude any benefits.

Can You Drink Diet Soda While Intermittent Fasting

The sweet taste is a particular topic in the context of intermittent fasting. On the one hand, it is already challenging to get rid of it. On the other hand, it additionally promotes cravings.

Most sugar-free sweeteners have zero proteins, carbohydrates, fat, or calories.

But what many diet gurus forget is that insulin release is not only stimulated by blood sugar.

However, this is what happens with sweeteners many can increase insulin levels even more than the sugar in regular coke.

Alcohol is also not a great idea during eating periods. Cocktails, mixed drinks, and especially beer are full of carbohydrates, stimulate insulin and appetite.

The exception is red wine, which can be drunk about glass size with dinner .

When drunk with meals, red wine positively affects blood pressure, glucose, and insulin levels .

Drinking Alcohol And Weight Loss: Some General Advice

If youre practicing intermittent fasting in order to lose weight, alcohol intake has an increased chance of being counterproductive to your goals. Some studies have indicated that alcohol consumption is a risk factor for obesity, though the epidemiological trends are unclear.

From a biological perspective, the only way to lose weight is by eating less calories than you burn. The extra calories from alcohol have an increased chance of turning into body fat and weight gain, and these drinks are void of micronutrients.

For example, the same carbohydrates and glucose from a glass of wine or beer could be supplied by fruits and vegetables, which contain fiber and micronutrients.

While these foods might be less exciting, that substitution could be the difference-maker for a better mood, improved overall health, and higher energy, especially while maintaining a calorie deficit.

Our recommendation? If youre seeking to lose weight, less alcohol is probably better, especially if you replace those calories with foods that will make you feel much better and healthier in the long run.

Why Does Fasting Work For Weight Loss

Intermittent fasting naturally makes you cut your daily energy intake without the work of counting calories or measuring what you eat. Those who practice alternate-day fasting, the 5:2 diet, or time-restricted eating reduce their daily calorie intake by 10-30%. Intermittent fasting also induces a metabolic switch around 12 hours into a fast: Your body switches from burning sugar to burning fat to generate energy, which leads to weight loss.

How Popular Is Fasting

Americans keep gaining weight and were always searching for ways to stop. Between 2000 and 2018, the prevalence of obesity in U.S. adults jumped from 30.5 percent to 42.4 percent, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

Hoping to lower the numbers on the scale, 43 percent of Americans followed a specific diet or eating plan in 2020, up from 38 percent just a year before. The most popular option was intermittent fasting.

The Importance Of Hydration During Intermittent Fasting

Do not be surprised if you become dehydrated during intermittent fasting. This is partly because of the fact that around 20-30% of the water we get is from food, and it comes mostly from fruits and vegetables. But another major reason you may become dehydrated is due to the fact that, during fasting, your body will likely be flushing out a lot of water. This can even lead to electrolyte imbalance .

Some of the symptoms of dehydration during intermittent fasting may include fatigue, thirst, dry mouth, headaches, slow digestion, and bloating. So, make sure that you stay properly hydrated throughout the day. This will also help you to feel less hungry, especially when you are starting out with intermittent fasting.

Water is essential for keeping your body cells functioning. It also helps to boost the benefits of intermittent fasting. As the body enters maintenance mode, it starts to cleanse proteins and other structures that have died or become dysfunctional. Without enough water, the body cannot perform the necessary detox efficiently.

This is why you need to take special care to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Most health authorities recommend drinking around 2 liters of fluid every day. However, as Ayurvedic medicine recommends , we are all born unique, and this means that we all require different amounts of liquids. So, let your thirst guide you for most of the time.

The Dangers Of Water Fasting

Before doing a water fast, you need to know the potential dangers. Because youre restricting all types of calories, youre likely to lose weight very quickly. While this may sound like a good thing, remember that the CDC recommends that weight loss happens no quicker than 1 to 2 pounds a week.

Losing weight too fast can cause issues, including weakness in your heart muscles that could lead to heart attacks or heart disease further down the road. Water fasting can also cause disordered eating or worsen eating disorders in some people.

Dont do a water fast without talking with your doctor and seeing if you could benefit from a 2472-hour water fast. While the health benefits may seem tempting, there are still dangers that you need to be aware of.

Fasting Fruit And Vegetable Juice

Compared to the consumption of whole foods, juices are way more harmful to health.

Since you remove the protective fiber with the flesh, juice leads to enormous blood sugar and insulin spikes.

Precisely because the dietary fibers protective effect is missing, the fructose in fruit juices also bursts into the liver unchecked, causing insulin resistance and visceral fat in the long run.

For this reason, non-alcoholic fatty liver is much more common than fatty liver disease caused by alcohol .

Fruit juice not only breaks the fast but is not much better than a coke no matter how organic it is. Anyone who seriously wants to lose weight must keep their hands off it even during eating periods.
