I’ve spent the past 8 years as a wellness coach, where it’s my passion to help others heal from the stressors of our daily lives.

My personal health struggles started in my late teens with an undiagnosed autoimmune condition and progressively worsened through my 20’s and early 30’s as I battled with chronic joint and muscle pain, overweight, adrenal fatigue, gluten sensitivity and a cornucopia of distressing health issues.

Today, at the age of 40, I can honestly say I have never felt stronger, healthier or more energetic. I spend my free time hiking, riding or climbing up the mountains I only dreamed of during most of my life. There’s no magic pill, but I am a huge advocate of intermittent fasting and can attest to the radical changes it has provided for my clients. I decided to start working with Pique after I discovered their teas and found that 1 month of drinking them healed my gut microbiome in a way I never thought possible.

Recommendations On Blood Tests

What blood tests do you recommend if I suspect Insulin Resistance/Metabolic Syndrome?

The tests I focus on are the fasting glucose and the hemoglobin A1C. I also test ALT to look for fatty liver and Triglycerides .

Are you able to provide general information about symtoms that are commonly associated with excess cortisol? How would one find out whether cortisol was a relevant factor?

Cortisol excess can be difficult to diagnose for certain, but most people will know if they are under excessive stress .

Potential Negative Effects Of Intermittent Fasting And Lchf

Is it normal that during fast I am quite cold? like hands and feet especially feet at night thanks. Hope Its not the sign my REE is going down.

No, it is not normal to be cold it means your REE is going down. Try to eat sufficiently on eating days or consider fasting less often. If it continues, you should consult your physician.

I have started intermittent fasting by skipping breakfast. Today i saw this on medXp: In study, skipping meals is linked to abdominal weight gain

I am sure the study was not done with low carb diets so there is that. What do you think?

This was an animal study and I would ignore it. Most studies proving that you must eat all the time prove nothing of the kind. Eating all the time to lose weight? I dont think so.

My health care practitioner is completely on board with LCHF in fact, advocates it for all patients. I have had limited success in using LCHF in fat loss. Although gaining muscle, my weight loss is minimal after 4 months of solid, no-cheating LCHF plan .I am currently trialling 16:8. My HCP is completely AGAINST fasting, as he claims that there is definitely protein status loss. He didnt mention starvation mode or anything like that, just a major concern that the level of protein in the body is always affected by IFWhat is your take on this? Does protein get used in the same way that fat stores do? If so, can you compensate by eating more protein in the 8 hour window?

No, it does not make sense to me.

Obesity Is A Hormonal As Much As A Caloric Imbalance

Insulin levels are almost 20 percent higher in obese subjects, and these elevated levels are strongly correlated to important indices such as waist circumference and waist/hip ratio. Does high insulin cause obesity?

The insulin causes obesity hypothesis is easily tested. If you give insulin to a random group of people, will they gain fat? The short answer is an emphatic Yes! Patients who use insulin regularly and physicians who prescribe it already know the awful truth: the more insulin you give, the more weight people gain. Numerous studies have already demonstrated this fact. Insulin causes weight gain.

In the landmark 1993 Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, researchers compared a standard dose of insulin to a high dose designed to tightly control blood sugars in type 1 diabetic patients. Large insulin doses controlled blood sugars better, but what happened to their weight? Participants in the high-dose group gained, on average, approximately 9.8 pounds more than participants in the standard group. More than 30 percent of patients experienced major weight gain!

Once we understand that hormonal imbalances can affect weight gain, we can begin to treat it. If we believe that excess calories alone cause obesity, then the treatment is to reduce calories. But this method has been a long-term failure. However, if too much insulin contributes to obesity, then it becomes clear that we need to lower insulin levels.

What is the Best Fast Length? (Fasting Basics 3) | Jason Fung

    Dear Dr. Fung,

My name is Dr. Paul DAmbrosio. Im a 57-year-old internist in Concord, Massachusetts. I got married at 35 years old at 307 lbs. . Two years into my marriage, and before any kids, I became polyureic and checked my blood sugar, it was 300+. I panicked. I saw the nutritionist, joined the gym, lost 60 lbs, and got into terrific shape. My sugars and A1c went to normal and my cholesterol dropped to 120.

Then came kids, a busy work schedule, and some trips around the world to amazing culinary hubs like Hong Kong and Paris. My weight drifted back up to 280 lbs. I buckled down and got to a steady weight of 240-250 lbs.

My diet didnt improve much, and my weight flattened out, but over the years my sugars went up and I started Metformin and maxed it out. Then, I started Victoza and maxed it out. Then I added Farxiga and maxed it out. Fast forward to two and half years ago when I had a STEMI , requiring 4 stents. Luckily, there was no Troponin bump and my myocardium was preserved. I was on Lisinopril, Plavix, Metoprolol, ASA, and my endocrinologist gave up and ordered Tresiba .

    Its All About Insulin

Given that Dr. Jason Fung has based his entire argument on insulin, we think its prime time for us to examine what this hormone really is, and the roles it plays in your body. So what is insulin?

Insulin is a hormone that enables your body to absorb the sugar in your blood, obtained from the carbohydrates in the food you eat, into your cells for energy. When you have more sugar in your body than it needs, insulin stores the excess amount in your liver and releases it when your blood sugar levels drop, or when you need more sugar.

Insulin is, therefore, a hormone that helps balance out your blood sugar levels and ensures that it stays within a healthy range.

How Should You Do Intermittent Fasting

How to Get Started with Fasting Dr. Jason Fung #dietplan in 2020

Most of us already “fast” every day while we are sleeping. Intermittent fasting can be as simple as extending that fast for a few more hours. You can choose from a variety of different intermittent fasting schedules. For example, fasting for 12, 14, 16, 18, or 20 hours and fitting all your meals in the time that’s left.

What Is The Basis Of Jason Fungs Fasting Argument

The entire basis behind Dr. Jason Fungs intermittent fasting idea is that the body exists only in two states the fed and the fasted state. He argues that when insulin levels are high, we’re continually storing food energy, and therefore, fat in our liver and body parts.

On the contrary, when insulin levels are low, he proposes that the body then switches to burning energy stores. Intermittent fasting, in his eyes, enables the body to use its stored energy when insulin levels are low.

Ultimately, he proposes that if you follow a regular eating pattern, your body is continuously overwhelmed by high levels of insulin it does not burn body fat. This has led to his argument that youll lose weight when you lower your insulin levels .

    Longer Fasting Regimens Part 7

There are several longer duration fasting regimens that are available. I arbitrarily divide it at 24 hours but there is no physiologic reason to do so, other than for classification purposes. There is no magic dividing line. We covered fasting regimens using periods less than 24 hours in our last post. This post will cover those schedules that use fasts longer than 24 hours.

    24 hour fasts

    Eat Stop Eat

This schedule of 24 hour fasting done once or twice per week is recommended by Brad Pilon in his book Eat, Stop, Eat . Brad was a bodybuilder who was a pioneer in popularizing intermittent fasting and really undertook a thorough review of the science behind fasting.

    The 5:2 Diet

    Alternate Daily Fasting

This is the dietary strategy that has the most research behind it. Much of it was done by Dr. Krista Varady, an assistant professor of nutrition with the University of Illinois Chicago. She wrote a book about her strategy in The Every Other Day Diet, although this was not the blockbuster success of the 5:2 diet.Even though it sounds like you only eat every other day, it is not quite. You can eat up to 500 calories on fasting days, just like in the 5:2 diet. However, fasting days are done on alternate days rather than 2x per week so it is a more intensive regimen. The major advantage of this regimen is that more research is available on this regimen than any other. We will consider these studies in more detail in later posts.

Blood Sugar And Other Tests During Fasting

Intermittent Fasting for Type 2 Diabetes (Step by Step) | Jason Fung
When I fast on just chicken broth my blood glucose drops to 65 and then on the 5th day to 55 mg/dl.Have you observed a drop like this in your fasting patients?

We often see this drop during fasting.

Should i worry if my blood sugar while fasting goes up to in the 140s ?

This is quite common, and due to the breakdown of glycogen or the production of new glucose in response to some of the hormonal changes of fasting. It is neither good nor bad.

Think of it this way. Your body is simply moving sugar from its stores and pushing it into the blood. Here your body has a chance to burn it off.

I purchased a glucose and ketone meter last week. Measured my glucose on Friday after fasting for about 21 hours and the reading was 3.6 mmol with the ketones at 1.9 mmol. It worried me a bit that the glucose was this low, should I be worried? On Saturday I went for a 6 km trail run at a high tempo and my glucose reading afterward were 2,4 mmol. I would like to stay in ketosis, but my fluctuating glucose readings are making me nervous. I do not experience any of the low glucose symptoms, but I tend to become paranoid when the numbers dont look right!

Listen to your body. If you feel unwell, then stop. Otherwise, if you are worried, reduce the fasting duration.

Dr Jason Fungs Top Five Foods To Eat For A Healthier Life

Of course, intermittent fasting is not as powerful if you dont eat the right foods in the first place! If your diet is composed solely of carbs and sugars, then odds are intermittent fasting wont give you the results youre looking for. What you eat directly affects your mental, emotional, and physical health, so its important to get clear on what foods you should eat and what foods you should avoid.

Whenever I have health experts come on The School of Greatness, I love to ask them about their favorite foods for a healthy lifestyle and why they love them. I asked Dr. Jason this same question: If you could only eat five foods, what would those be, based on your scientific research/benefits they have for the body? Here are his answers:

Intensive Dietary Management Program: A Guided Fasting Program

Have you been hearing about fasting? Im sure you have unless you have been a hermit for the past few years! Have you been curious to try it but wanting more guidance on how to do it? There is a program I want to tell you about.

Who started the Intensive Dietary Management Program?

The IDM was co-founded by a nephrologist and world-renowned author, Dr. Jason Fung and clinical researcher Megan Ramos, who herself used the program to practice fasting and reversed her obesity and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Fung and Ms. Ramos have both been instrumental in spreading the word about fasting as a treatment tool for treating obesity and type 2 diabetes.

In October of 2018, in the British Medical Journal, a group of investigators, including Dr. Fung and Ms. Ramos, published a case report of 3 patients who used therapeutic fasting under the guidance of their IDM fasting program. These patients were able to come off of insulin, lose significant amounts of weight and reduce their waist size and hemoglobin A1c, a marker of blood sugar control.

    What is the IDM Program?

The program is an online structured digital lifestyle intervention. They offer a free 12 week introductory course as well as paid health coaching to guide individuals on their fasting journey. They provide education, practical tips and support to help people use fasting as an effective tool.
