Beware A Common Danger

Prayer and fasting with diabetes

Fasting and prayer are about heart posture not a diet.

The reason I chose to give up my phone in my list time to fast and pray instead of a meal is my habit of turning a fast into a diet that is not the right heart posture.

If your heart is in the right place and you truly are drawing near to God with a purpose, fasting in any form will quicken your soul for Him.

What Are Some Fasting Errors

  • Fasting is not to punish your body. Although fasting may aid in physical discipline, which is important , the Bible never tells us to punish the body in order to build up the spirit.
  • Fasting does not earn Gods favor. The only way to earn Gods favor is to put your faith in the death of His Son on the cross and His resurrection. Jesus warns all people against using any ritual to reach God .
  • Do not let fasting become a source of guilt. Anything that brings condemnation on a believer is not the will of Jesus .
  • Fasting should not be entered into lightly.
  • Fasting does not guarantee a certain result, but there is always a reward .

For about four years I sufferedfrom severe pain in various parts ofmy body. Gradually the pain becameso intense that I could not go outeither by bus or taxi. Therefore, Ialways stayed at home and was mis-erable.

I went to the hospital for an examination, and when the results came in I was told thatI had inflammation of the joints as well as stomach andliver trouble. I continued the medical treatmentbecause of the urging of my family, but it had littleeffect on my condition.

Finally, I entered the largest hospital in the city ofMokpo, a city in the southern part of Korea, but thedoctors were unable to do anything to help me. Ibecame steadily worse. At last I decided to go to Seoulto a large hospital, thinking perhaps I could find helpthere. In June, 1973, I entered the Red Cross Hospitalwhere the results were the same. I continued to growworse. I was so discouraged that I left the hospital andwent home.

After arriving home, I was in deep depression andwanted to be alone. I did not want to see either myfamily or neighbors. I had taken all types of goodmedicine and had been to the best hospitals, but stillmy condition grew worse.

I was so thankful for the mercy of Christ I continuedto fast. Then I was filled with the Holy Spirit. How Ithank Him for His grace. I literally jump with joy andwalk with pleasure. Praise His Wonderful Name!

Prayer And Fasting In The Bible

Fasting is mentioned throughout the Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament . However, when Christians discuss fasting, two key passages often come up: one from the Old Testament prophet Isaiah and one from Jesus himself. But neither of these passages gives us specifics on how to abstain from food. Rather, both focus on the heart of the person fasting.

In Isaiah 58, God sees the nation of Israel abstaining from food for a day in order to seek help from God: justice for Israel and judgment on those who have oppressed Israel. However, the help does not come, and the people complain.

God turns the tables on Israel, pointing out how the Israelites are oppressing their own people. Employers withhold pay from the workers, and the people act violently toward each other. Through Isaiah, God tells the people that He doesnt want them to go a day without food He wants them to abstain from the ways theyve oppressed one another.

If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungryand satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday.

The Israelites were merely putting on a show of fasting for God without truly following Him.

Likewise, when Jesus instructs His followers on how to fast, he tells them not to do so for show.

The Bible is full of examples of people who have abstained from food to seek God:

Preventative Spiritual Health Care

Even our Savior, who had the fullness of the Holy Spirit, fasted 40 days and 40 nights in preparation for His titanic battle with the devil. Since Jesus Christ fasted to boost His spiritual health, can we do any less?

We cannot survive Satans fiery darts and reach spiritual healing without fasting! In one instance when Christs disciples could not cast out a demon, He told them that this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting . Proper fasting often results in significant spiritual breakthroughs. While we rely on the spiritual tools of prayer, Bible study and meditation on a daily basis, we occasionally need the power tool of fasting for deep-rooted weakness.

We need Gods help desperately. We need to make sure that nothing has cut us off from God and that our prayers are being heard and answered. Once we repent of these mistakes and are reconciled with God and our fellow man, then were ready to do Gods will without the shackles that bind us and the burdens that cripple us.

Gods promise is that if we call upon Him through fasting, Then your light shall break forth like the morning, your healing shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard .

How Fasting Is Carried Out According To The Bible

When I attended the church fasting was definitely one of the most challenging things for a christian to do.

The different fasts I encountered in church were the dry fast. Which meant eating no food at all until the end of the fast.

The water fast which meant you were only allowed to drink water during the fast.

You may or may not be able to relate to these fasts? If not, it just further proves that in church there is no universal way to fast.

The length of the fast was often from 6 oclock in the morning until 6 pm or 12 am in the evening.

It was never for the whole day, which you will find out is contrary to scriptures.

In order to understand the length of a fast in the bible we have to read scripture, where a fast takes place.

We find this when we look at an appointed day called

Day of Atonement, this gives us the blueprint of what the Most High considers a one day fast.

Leviticus 23:27-32

We can see from the above scriptures that the day of atonement last one biblical day.

It begins on the 9th day in the evening and finishes the following day on the 10th day in the evening.

So with that we know have a definitive answer about how long a one day fast actually last.

The terminology used here for not eating is to inflict your soul.

You now have a biblical, definitive fasting time.

Step : Prepare Yourself Spiritually

The very foundation of fasting and prayer is repentance. Unconfessed sin will hinder your prayers. Here are several things you can do to prepare your heart:

  • Confess every sin that the Holy Spirit calls to your remembrance and accept Gods forgiveness .
  • Seek forgiveness from all whom you have offended, and forgive all who have hurt you .
  • Make peace with others as the Holy Spirit leads you.
  • Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ as your Lord and Master refuse to obey your worldly nature .
  • Meditate on the attributes of God: His love, sovereignty, power, wisdom, faithfulness, grace, compassion, and others .
  • Begin your time of fasting and prayer with an expectant heart .
  • Do not underestimate spiritual opposition. Satan sometimes intensifies the natural battle between body and spirit .

Bishop Lewis Issues Call For Prayer And Fasting For The Healing Of The Nation

by Brenda Capen | Oct 27, 2020 | Bishop Lewis News, News, Racial Justice, Virginia News

Dear Virginia Annual Conference,

As I type this letter, I write it with an urgency to call the entire conference to join me and the for a three-day period of Prayer and Fasting for the Healing of the Nation from from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

I encourage everyone to commit to fasting and praying during these three days that we might be more aware of Christs presence in our personal lives, the Commonwealth, and the nation. Prayer is essential to sustain our faith and fasting calls us to refocus our attention and listen for God.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

We can no longer pretend and turn a blind eye that our nation is in the midst of trouble. We are witnessing the tension between party lines coupled with our anger that governs our speech. We are fighting two pandemicsCOVID-19 and systemic racism that have taken the lives of individuals and forced us into a world of pain and suffering.

I pray as an annual conference we will experience the power and presence of God in an extraordinary way as we commit ourselves from October 31 to November 2, 2020 to pray for the healing of the nation.

Peace and Blessings,

A 40 Day Complete Biblical Fast

Fasting and Prayer for Healing

Our examples of a 40 day complete fast are Jesus and Moses who took things to the extreme by having no food or water for 40 days.

  • So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
  • And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry.

Please note that these are extreme examples of fasting and prayer and you should never consider this until after consulting a doctor.

Proper Position For Praying

When we read scriptures we see the common potions that prayer took place from was on the knees, with hands stretched out to heaven:

Psalm 28:2

2 Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.

Solomon prayed with his hands in the air on his knees:

1 Kings 8:54

54 And it was so, that when Solomon had made an end of praying all this prayer and supplication unto the Lord, he arose from before the altar of the Lord, from kneeling on his knees with his hands spread up to heaven.

As you can see Solomon had his hands spread to heaven when he prayed on his knees as you can see in the image below:
