Mix Up A Fancy Intermittent Fasting

How to make intermittent fasting work faster!

We get it, water can sometimes feel boring, and it just isnt your very refreshing Coke that you usually use to quench your thirst. But there are multiple ways to spruce up water in order to make it as yummy as your usual soft drink and also an extremely healthy drink choice!

  • Infusing your water with a herbal tea bag e.g. peppermint, camomile, mixed berry, green tea, lemon-ginger etc. you can even add some cut up fruit to accentuate your chosen flavour!
  • Simply adding ice and a slice of lemon to your water will help to cleanse, refresh and alkalize your body.
  • Putting sliced cucumber into your water will act as an anti-inflammatory and also help hydrate your body.
  • Adding mint to your water will also give it a refreshing twist!
  • And if youre feeling particularly healthy, why not add a SuperGreens multivitamin sachet into your water .

Why Do 16 Hours Work Well

Since we know now that prolonged fasting burns fat more efficiently, why should we fast for 16 hours?

There are two substantial reasons for 16 hours of intermittent fasting:

  • Integration into everyday life
  • Induction of autophagy

On the one hand, the 16 hours of intermittent fasting have practical reasons. If you skip breakfast or dinner, you have already reached the 16 hours of intermittent fasting.

To eat only from noon to 8 PM can be easier than you might think because morning hunger can be unlearned.

Thus, and because it means that you can always have dinner with your family, you can comfortably integrate this 16/8 schedule into everyday life.

Autophagy, on the other hand, is the intracellular recycling system in your body and the second reason for the 16 hours of intermittent fasting.

Moreover, autophagys discovery was such a scientific milestone that it was rewarded with the Nobel Prize .

When food is scarce, the body goes from growth into maintenance mode. Then it does not want to grow any further but to recycle broken cell parts.

Therefore, the following three nutrient sensors exist in the body, switching autophagy on and off:

  • Insulin: Sensitive to carbohydrates and proteins
  • mTOR: Sensitive to proteins
  • AMPK: Sensitive to lack of energy in cells

So if the dietary energy supply regardless of which macronutrient to cells is interrupted, cells want to react sustainably and use disused cell parts to generate energy.

How To Break Your Fast

Depending on how long youve been fasting, youll want to make sure you break your fast, slow and easy. I recommend avoidingcarbohydrates or foods that will spike insulin and blood sugar. Bone broths and high-fat foods like olives, avocado and nut butter are a great way to go. Also, youll want to avoid these foods during a fast as they may break your fast inadvertently.

Is there ever a time you should stop fasting? Yes! If your ketones get above 7, your blood sugar drops below 40 or you are not feeling well, you should break your fast. You can also try drinking salt water or taking a mineral supplement like MIN to help stabilize minerals during fasting.

There are some people who should be cautious about doing this, such as people with adrenal fatigue, complicated health conditions, or women the week before their menstrual cycle .

What The Studies Show

Intermittent fasting has been shown, in many short-term research studies, that it can help you lose weight, improve your health and potentially protect you from developing certain diseases. And whats most appealing, is that it doesnt restrict you daily, like conversional dieting.

Studies have also shown that intermittent fasting may help prevent or even reverse diabetes. This is because it helps to control and reduce insulin and glucose concentrations in your blood.

Intermittent fasting may improve your sleep and gut health. It can also improve measures associated with cardiovascular disease and cancer, and possibly reduce inflammation.

However, theres still not enough studies to show how safe intermittent fasting is if you do it for a long time. But in general, most research highlights that its safe in otherwise healthy adults.

Many people need an adjustment period to get used to fasting for 16 hours, Dr. Mattson notes, adding that you might feel irritable and hungry during that time. Such feelings often improve within four weeks or so, he says.

You may also need a little while to figure out how best to approach eating within your eight-hour window. It comes down to your appetite, Harbstreet says. A little trial and error with the approach is a good ideawhether you go with three meals in the eight hours, or two meals and a snack or two.

Your needs and preferences might vary somewhat from day to day, but having a general sense of your preferred approach will help you make a plan for what to eat when.

The Science Methods And Benefits Of Fasting

When it comes to ideas around living a healthy lifestyle, good nutrition and adequate exercise are often core pillars. While this is certainly true, there is more we can consider regarding our relationship with food and healthy living.

Fasting is the willing abstinence or reduction from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Although sometimes viewed as unhealthy, depriving, or reserved for religious reasons, short-term fasting can offer excellent health benefits. As research grows in this area of health, fasting is becoming more widely accepted as a legitimate means of managing weight and preventing disease. At the same time, it is important that fasting is done in proper and healthy ways.

The bottom line here is that the service isnt a scam, but it isnt exactly legit either, as it may not be worth the amount that the company asks its users to pay. The additional parts of the program, such as the meal ideas, workout plans, and informational articles, could easily be found elsewhere without too much hassle. Plus, some of the companys practices and communication with customers has been questionable, at best. The most glaring example of this is the requirement to cancel via email if youve opened your account via a web browser.

While some may find contentment with what this application offers, other dieters will have better luck finding personal fitness apps elsewhere. Consider skipping this uninspired subscription service instead of your next meal.

Intermittent Fasting For Weight Loss

Research is limited on how well intermittent fasting works for weight loss. Some studies have indicated that it can help people lose weight in just a matter of weeks, while others found no weight-loss benefit at all.

It may also depend on the type of intermittent fasting schedule that you choose. Here’s what research says about three of the most popular intermittent fasting methods:

  • 16/8 intermittent fasting. A 2020 study of 116 adults found no significant difference in weight loss between a group that limited all calorie intake to between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. each day and a control group that was allowed three meals per day, plus snacks. Notably, the 12-week study found fasting could lead to loss of muscle mass.
  • Alternate-day fasting. A 2017 study that compared an alternate-day fasting plan with a typical calorie restriction diet found no significant difference in weight loss between participants. The study involved 100 obese participants, and there was a significant dropout rate only 69% of the subjects stayed until the end.
  • 5:2 intermittent fasting. A 2013 study found that, from a sample of 115 overweight women, those who tried a 5:2 intermittent fasting diet for 3 months lost more fat and experienced a greater reduction of insulin resistance than women who followed a standard calorie-restricted diet for the same time period.

The 16/8 intermittent fasting approach shows promise for supporting some aspects of health, but any splashy claims of effortless weight loss or disease prevention are premature at best, experts tell WW. Most studies thus far have been small or conducted on animals more research is needed to figure out the full effects of intermittent fasting, as well as optimal approaches. Heres what science has to say about some hot topics so far.

Fasting Routines And Dofasting Overview

The most common fasting plan is a 16:8 plan. This plan includes fasting for 16-hours. After the 16-hour fast, the dieter can then eat for the next 8 hours, after which, they begin fasting again. Other common plans are the 14:10 plan or 12:12 plan, allowing for 14-hour fasts with 10-hour eating periods and 12-hour fasts with a 12-hour eating period.

When you sign up for a subscription to DoFasting, there are four main areas of the app. The Home screen shows your current fasting times for your specific plan. Other sections of the app are accessible via the Home screen and include Meals, Workout, and Articles, leading to self-described content.

That is more or less the basics of what this has to offer. The Home screen, which is where you will mainly be as you use the DoFasting app, displays a circular countdown animation along with the current remainder of the time you have left before you can eat or before you must begin fasting.

Users will also find a button to pause the timer, a display for your current fasting plan, and your progression through the present day. Lastly, youll find an option to adjust the timer, allowing you to give yourself a little extra time for fasting or for eating if you need it.

Is the 16:8 Intermittent Fasting Method the best way to ...

Intermittent fasting is about when you eat, says Charlotte Martin, MS, RDN, CPT, owner of Shaped by Charlotte, LLC. Depending on the IF approach, youre either shortening the eating window each day, or engaging in about 24-hour fasts one or more times a week. One of the most popular approaches is the 16:8 method, which is when you fast for an 16-hour window, like from 8 p.m. to 12 p.m. the next day.

Essentially, by restricting your food intake to a shortened time window, you naturally decrease your caloric intake and, in turn, can lose weight. âNot only are you taking in fewer calories, but youre also slowing down your insulin pump, which may boost fat burn,â explains Martin.

What Happens To Your Body When You Fast

When you dont consume food or calories, the body looks for other ways to generate energy, such as drawing on glucose, ie. sugar stores. Once the glucose is significantly used up, the bodys metabolism changes and the body begins to burn fatty acids from stored fat for energy. When this transition to burning fat for energy is made, the body begins producing ketones and is said to be in a state of ketosis. You can measure your level of ketones using a Keto Mojo .

Once you reach a state of ketosis, many of the benefits of fasting start to kick in. Now, the specific benefits can vary depending on how many hours you have been fasting. For example, growth hormones kick in at 13 hours, whereas autophagy is thought to kick in at 16-18 hours. MIT research shows that at 24 hours intestinal stem cells will begin repair and 24 hours is also when you start to see weight loss.

A Beginners Guide To Fasting: Everything You Need To Know About Fasting

Fasting refers to the deliberate abstention from food and/or fluids for a period of time, for therapeutic purposes. Many people dont know that fasting has been used for thousands of years in various religious and spiritual practices throughout human history, and in a sense, fasting is part of everyday life. The term breakfast is the meal that breaks the fast, which is done daily.

The recent increase in scientific research around fasting has allowed us to understand just how fasting positively affects our physiology, cells, aging, disease and overall health. What has been incredible for me to watch in my own clinic and coaching is how many people, regardless of symptoms or condition, have benefited from this completely free and simple biohack!

In 2016 Dr. Ohsumi changed the fasting landscape dramatically when he won a Nobel prize for his work on autophagy. Autophagy means self-eating and is the bodys way of cleaning out damaged cells in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells. Autophagy is like the fast track to healing and slowing the aging process. What does autophagy have to do with fasting? Well, fasting triggers this magical autophagy process. Essentially, fasting helps accelerate healing and gets your body to naturally repair itself!

Does Intermittent Fasting Work For Everyone

No diet is a one-size-fits-all solution, but most people can safely fast with no concerns.

The reasons why intermittent fasting works are simple human biology. If you fast in a safe way using the 16:8, 18:6, or 5:2 methods, you should lose weight and become healthier.

Intermittent fasting relies on you having some body fat stored. If you are underweight, you should not take this approach to your diet.

You should also consult with a doctor or medical professional before fasting if any of the following apply:

  • You have diabetes or gastrointestinal conditions.
  • You have low blood pressure.
  • You are on any sort of medication.
  • Youve got a history of eating disorders.
  • Youre pregnant, breastfeeding, or trying to get pregnant.
  • You have amenorrhea.
  • Your body doesnt regulate blood sugar normally.

These things dont mean you definitely cant fast, but medical advice is a good idea.

How Long Does Intermittent Fasting Take To Work? [2021]

Whether youre trying to lengthen your night-time break from eating by having an earlier dinner or later breakfast, or going a step further and following an intermittent fasting plan, some scientists believe there are benefits beyond weight-loss to giving your digestive system a break. They argue that for many people it can improve metabolic and overall health.

You Are Eating The Wrong Type Of Food

Many other diets come with a list of foods that you can and cannot eat. However, that is not how intermittent fasting works.

Intermittent fasting lets you eat anything you would like within a specific eating window.

Because intermittent fasting does not restrict your diet, it is easy to slip right into unhealthy feeding habits. Binging on unhealthy processed foods even if it is only in your eating window could be responsible for your slow results.

Stuffing too many calories during your eating periods is also counterproductive.

During your intermittent fast, consider changing your meal plan. Toss out the unhealthy processed food and switch to healthier options. Think of foods like whole grains that are rich in dietary fiber.

Furthermore, sugary foods could send your blood sugar levels through the roof and contribute to reduced insulin sensitivity.

Staying away from sugary foods protects you from sugar highs and the sugar crash that results after. It also helps keep your blood sugar within the normal range.

Frequently Asked Questions Concerns And Complaints

Im a woman. Should I do anything differently?

I havent worked with women on implementing an intermittent fasting schedule, so I cant speak from experience on this one.

That said, I have heard that women may find a wider window of eating to be more favorable when doing daily intermittent fasting. While men will typically fast for 16 hours and then eat for 8 hours, women may find better results by eating for 10 hours and fasting for 14 hours. The best advice I can give anyone, not just women, is to experiment and see what works best for you. Your body will give you signals. Follow what your body responds favorably to.

Also, if youre a female, there is an allfemale page on Facebook that discusses intermittent fasting. Im sure you could find a ton of great answers and support there.

I could never skip breakfast. How do you do it?

I dont. Breakfast foods are my favorite, so I just eat them at 1pm each day.

Also, if you eat a big dinner the night before, I think youll be surprised by how much energy you have in the morning. Most of the worries or concerns that people have about intermittent fasting are due to the fact that they have had it pounded into them by companies that they need to eat breakfast or they need to eat every three hours and so on. The science doesnt support it and neither do my personal experiences.

I thought you were supposed to eat every 3 hours?
