Fasting In The Fast Lane: Is It Okay To Watch Tv Series During The Fast

Fully Loaded! Can an EV Pickup (Rivian R1T) Survive a Hard Days Work?

Im tempted to say, Why ask? Isnt it obvious? But rushing isnt a sign of a great mind, so lets think about it.

On the one hand, everything really is obvious: fasting is a time of abstinence and asceticism restricting certain types of food, entertainment, and even communication, let alone TV series. At the same time, the system of fasting limitations as we know it appeared long before todays generations, the television and, most importantly, long before the modern rhythm of life. Perhaps we should dwell on the latter in more detail.

It is difficult to find anything more inconsistent with the Christian disposition of the soul than the rhythm of life of a modern person with his constant busyness, the rush and the bustle. Our multitasking life clearly denies us any opportunity to stop and look around, leaving those who lag behind it no choice but to catch up and thus forcing them to live even faster and hence even more thoughtlessly. Where in this whirlwind can we find space for God, or time for the soul, even if its only a minute?

If we say that measure is good in virtue, then it is all the more important in rest. In fact, the sense of proportion will tell you where harmless rest ends and sin begins. We should learn to hear this feeling and follow it before we pick up that remote control.

Life In The Fast Lane: My Experiment With Intermittent Fasting For Health And Fitness

UPDATE: I wrote this update 3 months after the original post below. Read below first, then read the update to get the latest!

I’m turning 40 this December, and that’s caused me to deeply re-evaluate my health. In high school I had wrestled at the 152 lb weight level and was a gymnast. In my 20s, I ran two 50 mile ultra-marathons and a half dozen marathons. I had a 33 inch waist and weighed 185 lbs. I could eat whatever I wanted and stay in good shape. But after a decade of doing startups, I found myself in my late 30s in much worse shape. My metabolism hit a wall when I turned 30, and although I didn’t eat terribly, I also found it hard to figure out exactly how to get back to where I was in my 20s. My waist was 38 inches and I weighed 245 lbs 93 lbs over my wrestling weight. My triglycerides were 33% above where they should’ve been. I’d imagine this happens to many of us as we get older, and I felt helpless as I watched all of this unfold, almost like it was happening according to some script that I wasn’t in control of. Most of all, I was really disappointed in myself for not staying on top of my health, but I couldn’t find the right balance of eating and exercising to change the path I was on. It felt like I was on a slow motion slippery slope as I got older and more out of shape.

The Mind, or: My brain as my own worst enemy

For 45-year-old Priya Gubbi , a Mangalore-based teacher, intermittent fasting is no more a regime that she has to consciously practise or adhere to. It has become a way of life, she says, after barely two months of taking up the practice to get fitter, healthier and develop holistically. I fasted for the first time in November, and even though I hadnt eaten anything the whole day, my energy levels were surprisingly high, Gubbi says. I didnt get my usual cravings for coffee after a few days and my body instantly started feeling lighter, she adds.

The decision to take up intermittent fasting didnt come easily to her. After nearly six years of neglect prompted by strain in her feet caused by plantar fasciitis , she found a way to reclaim her lost energy. Because of my health conditions, I couldnt walk too much, which led me to put on almost 12 kg extra weight it restricted my movement. Once lethargy set in, my general well-being took a hit. I went from being a bubbly person to a grumpy one, Gubbi recalls. However, the tables soon turned for her and she started fasting intermittently after seeing videos about it on the internet. I can now go up to 20 hours without eating and without feeling any dip in my energy levels, she says. The key lies in listening to the body, she says. I eat when I am hungry I even have a chocolate sometimes if I feel like it I am not putting my body under any stress, she says.
